Sudan Margins

The alternative Voice of the Marginalized Sudanese


Mission Statement


Sudan-Margins is an alternative forum that aims at expressing the voices and views of Sudanese men and women who belong to the marginalized areas of Sudan or those who are in solidarity with us.

Over the decades, the voices of those in the margins have been silenced and they have been underrepresented and misrepresented in the mainstream media and other institutions. This initiative allows the marginalized Sudanese to define our main priorities and speak for ourselves in contrast to the current dominant trend where those at the centre speak on our behalf.

Sudan-margins.org aims to undertake an alternative, creative, New Sudan approach to Sudanese politics, society and culture; to provide information that brings in the voices of the Sudanese grassroots and to play an alternative educational role. In that sense, we hope to fight racism, sexism and other forms of marginalization in our societies.

The site will include an e-institute which constitutes a source of cutting edge information and educational materials that will be available in other forms including printed materials, life workshops and training, performances and site specific installations and environmental artwork. It also includes an e-archive and a book club

As a way of encouraging discussion and communication, we have established the New Sudan Discussion Forum to act as a platform for addressing issues that are relevant to the interests of the marginalized and of New Sudanists. We do not wish to duplicate the work of other Sudanese internet discussion fora; but rather to critically complement the contributions of some of these fora. We aim to fill the gap where the lack of a specialized forum that addresses the issues pertaining to the marginalized of Sudan, and the under-representation of those from the margins in the mainstream fora has deprived Sudanese public cyber space from important and alternative input.

We will issue Difference, which is a periodical where rigorous, peer reviewed research, reviews, literature, poetry, etc. is published.
