بوب مارلى يعتبر مغنى جيلنا. عندما توفى كنا في المرحلة الجامعية وكانت موضة تضفير الشعر و القميص الطويل غالبة على الشباب في ذلك الوقت وموسيقى الرقى تسيطر على جميع الحفلات الشبابية.
أذكر أن جيمي كليف الرائد الآخر لموسيقى الرقى كان قد زار السودان في السبعينات من القرن الماضي وأمضى جل وقته في حمد النيل حيث كان معجبا بإيقاعات النوبة أيما إعجاب و قد قام بتسجيل أشرطة كثيرة لها و قال انه سوف يضمن بعض هذه الإيقاعات في أغانيه القادمة.
بعد بوب مارلى دخل إيقاع الرقى لكثير من الأغاني السودانية ويمكن كان موجود قبلها ولكن غير قوى وغير ملحوظ.
