Child concern: arrest and torture of minors in Darfur
On 19 March 2004, three (3) minors were arrested by the armed forces in Jeway Kheena village in suspicion of joining the armed rebellion. Their details are as follows:
1. Abdel Rahman Abaker Abdel Rahman, 17 yrs, student, Zaghawa tribe 2. Zakaria Abdullah Abdel Kareem, 13 yrs, student, Zaghawa tribe 3. Suleiman Adam Salih, 14 yrs, student, Zaghawa tribe
They were detained in military camp in Jeway Kheena village and it has been alleged that they have been subjected to torture by the military intelligence in Jeway Kheena. They were chained and beaten with the guns butts and flogged. At time of writing, there is no confirmed information whether they remain in detention or not.
Background
SOAT condemns these arrests and torture of minors in violation to the convention on the Right of the Child, which Sudan ratified on 3 August 1990, and urges the Government of Sudan to:
Take all necessary measures to ensure the physical and psychological integrity of Abdel Rahman Abaker Abdel Rahman, Zakarea Abdella Abdel Kareem and Suleiman Adam Salih. Investigate the arrest and the torture of Abdel Rahman Abaker Abdel Rahman, Zakarea Abdella Abdel Kareem and Suleiman Adam Salih Guarantee the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of association throughout Sudan in accordance with national laws and international human rights standards.
