PROTECT THE PEOPLE OF DARFUR-
UN PEACEKEEPERS NEEDED NOW!The massive forced displacements by Sudanese armed forces and Janjawid
militias in the Sudanese region of Darfur has created a humanitarian
crisis which is now spreading into Chad. Over 300,000 people are believed to have lost their lives since the conflict erupted and around two million civilians have fled from their homes. Systematic human rights abuses have occurred, including killing, torture, rape, l o oting and destruction of property.
The African Union mission in Sudan (AMIS) does not have the means or,
frequently, the will to protect civilians. A UN peacekeeping force is
needed NOW to do this in Darfur. Whilst a UN resolution has now been
passed by the UN Security Council calling for UN peacekeepers in Darfur, the resolution invites the consent of Sudan. The battle continues as the government of Sudan is still refusing to accept UN Peacekeepers.
Instead,as in 2003 it has again chosen the road to war and human rights
Violations by launching a new offensive, accompanied by bombings, killings, rapes and lo oting. At least 650,000 people are now denied aid and thousands of newly displaced are running from the attacks. We will campaign until UN Peacekeepers are on the ground! Please join other supporters of Amnesty International and our partner organisations in the Day for Darfur.
