I was on a Conference Call 30 minutes ago with a highly respected and trusted source in Sudan. He informed us, my self and Tim Nonn of Dear Sudan, the following urgent message:

"Right now while we are speaking, the government is conducting a massive aerial bombarding in Jebel Marra eastern side. This is specifically targeting Dogo; Derbat; and Sunny villages. The bombarding started yesterday and continuing as of this moment. The Government is using more than 30,000 troops, Army, militia, and Jangaweed in this military campaign.
We ask for an immediate intervention without seeking the consent of Khartou. It's a big shame to the international community to watch this happening and continue debating... we need protection, right now."

This is a very nasty campaign of terror. I trust your source because the military junta would do more than that. Today, the UN held a crucial meeting about the situation in Darfur. I am not sure if the UN came to a resultion for this tragedy.

Please keep up the good work of revealing the atrocities and brutalities of this regime. In my opinion, the jumta will bring about more mayhems in the next few days to show the world that they are capable of restoring order in that region.

I am certain that the international community will not sit silent for all crimes committed by the government. Let us do something about this.

معاناة النازحين بدارفور تتفاقم مع استمرار التهديد الأمني (الفرنسية-أرشيف)

اتهم الاتحاد الأوروبي الحكومة السودانية بقصف المدنيين في إقليم دارفور، في حين اعتبرت الخرطوم أن ما يجري يدخل ضمن اتفاق السلام في الإقليم.


وقال المبعوث الخاص للاتحاد بيكا هافيستو بعد زيارة لدارفور استمرت ثلاثة أيام، إنه شاهد طائرات أنتونوف بالإقليم يجرى تجهيزها استعدادا للهجوم، وأضاف أنه رأى أيضا أطفالا بعضهم في الثالثة من العمر أصيبوا في عمليات القصف.


وأوضح للصحفيين في الخرطوم أن ما يحدث يؤكد بوضوح أن هناك هجمات تقع على المدنيين.


من ناحية أخرى قال منسق عمليات الإغاثة الإنسانية بالأمم المتحدة يان إيغلاند إن "القتل الجماعي وجرائم حرب وضد الإنسانية والتطهير العرقي كلها أعمال واضحة جدا على الأرض".

اتفاق السلام

وأكد عبد السلام أمام مجلس الأمن أمس التزام الحكومة السودانية بالاتفاق الذي نص على دمج قوات المتمردين مع قوات الحكومة. وأوضح أنه سيتم نشر ستة آلاف جندي سوداني بحلول 30 سبتمبر/أيلول الجاري وعشرة آلاف آخرين بحلول 31 ديسمبر/كانون الأول المقبل للمساهمة في جهود إرساء الأمن بالإقليم.



مندوب السودان جدد رفض بلاده نشر قوات دولية بدارفور (الفرنسية-أرشيف)
وأدان المندوب السوداني قرار مجلس الأمن رقم 1706 بإرسال قوات أممية لدارفور، ووصفه بأنه "إجراء متسرع يرقى إلى أن يكون حوارا من طرف واحد".

رايس تشترط
ربطت وزيرة الخارجية الأميركية كوندوليزا رايس تحسين علاقات بلادها مع الخرطوم بقبول الأخيرة قوة سلام تابعة للأمم المتحدة في إقليم دارفور غربي السودان.


وقالت رايس عقب لقائها بنظيرها السوداني لام أكول في واشنطن إنها حثت الخرطوم بـ"أقوى العبارات الممكنة" على قبول تلك القوات, نافية أن تكون أحرزت تقدما في المحادثات بهذا الشأن.


وحول رد أكول على تلك المطالب, أوضحت رايس أن الوزير السوداني عبر عن أمله في تحسين علاقات بلاده مع واشنطن, لكنها عادت وقالت إن ذلك غير وارد "ما لم يتصرف السودان بتقدير للمسؤولية", متهمة الخرطوم بعدم الرغبة في استقرار الوضع في دارفور.


كما أشارت إلى أن موفد الرئيس السوداني عمر البشير حمل بالفعل رسالة إلى الرئيس جورج بوش تدعو إلى تحسين العلاقات بين البلدين.

THE AFRICAN UNION FORCE We also reject the Sudanese Government's recent threat to expel the African Union force (AMIS) from Darfur unless AMIS agrees to not allow a transition to a UN force after the AMIS mandate expires on September 30th. This is clearly a maneuver to prevent the deployment of a robust, UN-sponsored peacekeeping force capable of protecting the people of Darfur. With less than three weeks to go in its mandate, AMIS resources are rapidly dwindling and there are no new funding commitments to support a continuation of the mission. It is incumbent on the international community to persuade the Government of Sudan to allow the continued presence of the AMIS force until a UN force is deployed. UN PEACEKEEPING FORCE We welcome UN Security Council Resolution 1706, which calls for the deployment of up to 20,500 peacekeepers in Darfur. But the Security Council member states must follow up this first step with a concerted, coordinated initiative to press the Khartoum government to accept a UN force that has a strong mandate, and the appropriate capacity to end the violence and produce a lasting peace. This Resolution, adopted with 12 votes (with Russia, China and Qatar abstaining), falls under Chapter VII, article 42 of the UN Charter, which calls on the members of the Security Council to 'take such action by air, sea, or land forces as may be necessary to maintain or restore international peace and security.' The UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations must now work quickly to develop the rules of engagement to ensure that the force has the necessary means to protect civilians. EL FASHER, 11 Sep 2006 (IRIN) - In an apparent widening of its military offensive against rebels in North Darfur State, the Sudanese military have used Antonov planes to bomb another seven villages in the volatile region, sources in the region say. "On Saturday, Antonov planes were bombing seven villages south of Tawilla town, focusing on Tabarat and Tina," a local source, who declined to be named, said. "On Sunday, about 45 vehicles carrying government troops moved through Tina." The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antَnio Guterres, warned on Friday that the worsening situation in Darfur threatened to spark another round of massive displacement that could destabilise the region. "Millions of people are already at grave risk," the High Commissioner said. "Hundreds are still dying amid ongoing violence, and thousands are still being forcibly displaced. Urgent international action is needed to put pressure on the parties to the conflict and to convince everyone involved on the ground to let humanitarian agencies safely carry out their work. If things don't improve, we're heading for a major catastrophe." Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of people in Darfur have gone without food aid for three consecutive months because fighting and banditry have prevented the UN World Food Programme (WFP) from reaching them, Kenro Oshidari, WFP’s representative in Sudan, warned on Monday. Oshidari said that insecurity had cut off 355,000 people from food aid in August - all of them in North Darfur. "Most of these people have now gone three entire months without our help. Their situation is even more desperate because we’re in the middle of the ‘hunger season’ - the period right before the harvest - so they have very little chance of finding food elsewhere," Oshidari said. Large swathes of territory in North Darfur are under the control of the National Redemption Front (NRF), an alliance of rebels who did not sign the 5 May Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) between the government and the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), led by Minni Minnawi. The latest attacks are part of a major Sudanese military offensive against the NRF rebels that started in late August. Although the offensive initially targeted villages north of the state capital El Fasher, last weekend’s attacks extended the campaign to the eastern Jebel Marra mountains, southwest of Tawilla town and about 50 kilometres west of the capital. The observer said the army was trying to cut off the NRF rebels and prevent them from reaching new supplies. An NRF source confirmed that the group was running short of fuel and ammunition. Last week, about 50 NRF vehicles moved south into the Tawilla area, allegedly to join forces with Mohamed Adam Abdul el-Salam - better know as Tarada. He is a senior commander of Abdelwahid Mohamed al-Nur’s faction of the SLM/A, an independent rebel group that also refused to sign the DPA. His bases in the eastern Jebel Marra seem to be the target of the new campaign. Meanwhile, one of the NRF rebel coalition members, the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), is reportedly moving towards the Chadian border, away from the main NRF force. "It seems the NRF is splitting up," a political analyst said. Although government forces recaptured the minor towns of Sani Hayi and Sibafi over the weekend, it seems that the offensive north of El Fasher has slowed down. Initially, the Sudanese military rapidly gained territory as NRF rebels avoided a direct confrontation. With the loss of Um Sidir town, however, the NRF started to counter-attack, slowing down the advancing government forces. The offensive started on 28 August when the villages of Abu Sakin, Kulkul, Sayah and Turra, 35 km northwest of El Fasher, were attacked by Antonov planes. Subsequently, Sudanese armed forces took over the area and pushed further northwards, recapturing Um Sidir on 31 August. The military campaign comes as Khartoum is threatening to eject African Union peacekeepers. The mandate of the AU Mission in Sudan (AMIS) is due to expire on 30 September and the Sudanese government has refused to accept an extension as a transition to a United Nations peacekeeping force in Darfur. On 31 August, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling for a gradual transition from the under-funded and under-equipped AU mission in Darfur, which has been unable to prevent widespread abuses against civilians, to a stronger UN protection force. But the deployment of the UN force of 17,500 troops and 3,300 civilian police is contingent on consent by the government of Sudan, which has so far rejected calls for a UN force in Darfur.[/

But it had a big catch. These troops can be deployed only with the consent of Sudan’s government, which in effect allows the regime responsible for this genocide to decide whether or not the killings will continue. Clearly, that cannot be the end of the discussion. The next step is for leading governments, including Washington, to apply maximum political pressure on Sudan, all the countries that support it (including China) and all the nations that could help sway it from its current course. The Bush administration needs to couple its tough talk on Darfur with some focused, high-level diplomacy. This would be a good time for President Bush to name a special envoy for Darfur. To make clear that the full weight of the administration is behind the new envoy, Mr. Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice should call officials in Sudan, China and Russia, as well as in powerful African countries like South Africa and Nigeria. Similar efforts should be made by leaders of the European Union. At the end of this month, African Union forces, the only peacekeepers in Darfur, are scheduled to go home. That will leave the field open to President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and his army to resume the killing, which they have given every indication of doing. That gives the rest of the world only three weeks to avoid a worsening tragedy.
