Horrendous human rights situation in Sudan
Join to defend freedom of expression and media in Sudan

1. Slaughter of a publisher and editor-in-Chief of Alwifaq daily newspaper
2. Fear of unlawful killings of civilians in North Darfur

Condemnation has been widely expressed by the international human rights community and Sudanese journalists and human rights activists as journalist Mohamed Taha Mohamed Ahmed was beheaded after receiving death threats on a number of occasions two years ago. Just one day before the killing of the journalist, close to six dozens of Sudanese peaceful demonstrators were detained and beaten in Khartoum. A culture and a discourse of religiously originated Fatwas and death threats have been overwhelming the political spectacle since 2004 when intellectuals, human rights activists and politicians were overtly threatened and as recently as 2006 another Fatwa was issued against the secretary general of the Sudanese Communist party leaders in Port Sudan by a similar fanatic group.
There is also a fear of unlawful killings in North Darfur as a military offensive of the Sudanese government is underway in North Darfur (refer to AI Index: AFR 54/048/2006, September 7, 2006

The Sudanese Canadian Human Rights Organization calls upon:
1. The international community to exert pressure on the Sudanese government to investigate the killing of M. T. Mohamed Ahmed and uproot the feverish culture of Fatwas and unlawful crackdown on Sudanese peaceful protestors.
2. The UN to speed up its efforts to implement its resolutions on Darfur to ensure a UN peacekeeping force is deployed as soon as possible in Darfur to stop further victimization of five million Darfurians.

أتجوَّلُ في الوطنِ العربيِّ

لأقرأَ شعري للجمهورْ

فأنا مقتنعٌ

أنَّ الشعرَ رغيفٌ يُخبزُ للجمهورْ

وأنا مقتنعٌ – منذُ بدأتُ –

بأنَّ الأحرفَ أسماكٌ

وبأنَّ الماءَ هوَ الجمهورْ

أتجوَّلُ في الوطنِ العربيِّ
