She went through series of surgeries and health condition is getting better, according to human rights activists who are in direct contact with her nedical team.

Ms. Rone co-authored many important reports on Darfur (see below) especially the congressional testimonies.... we hold her in our thoughts and prayers...

Thanks friends for your thoughts and prayers... here is an update from Prof. Richard Lobba, aka Abdulatif Almaz, executive director of Sudan Studies Association:

Subject: Current Status of Jemera Rone

Dear Friends:

For those who may not have heard, Jemera Rone, staunch defender of human rights in Sudan and super fine human being herself as well as member of the Sudan Studies Association, was severely injured in a traffic accident in Washington on 25 August 2006. She very narrowly escaped death and was in a coma for some weeks. Happily the news received minutes ago today from her sister Janice is that she finally opened her eyes and smiled. There is a long way to go since she is still in intensive care but now conscious and in a great deal of pain on her left side that took the grave side impact. Her pelvis is broken along with her clavicle, coccyx, and ribs. She suffered grave cardio-vascular injuries with her aorta being severed and damage to her lungs. She still has a ventilator tube in her throat but it is hoped that this may be withdrawn fairly soon. At this point she is not receiving visitors nor can she be spoken with, but I personally encourage all manner of thoughtful and supportive cards to be sent to her sister Janice who will take them and read them to our dear friend and colleague Jemera. She simply has to get better. We are in great need of her voice for the struggling voiceless especially in these difficult days in Sudan. She will get better! She must get better!

In Peace and Love and my strongest and warmest best wishes to her.

Richard LOBBAN,

Executive Director, Sudan Studies Association
