The story of Kenny Rogers and Dolly Partonโs decades-long friendship
By Emily Yahr March 23, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. GMT+3
About three years ago, Kenny Rogers sat for an interview with Southern Living โ naturally, the conversation turned to Dolly Parton, his longtime friend and singing partner. The question: Whatโs your favorite memory of Dollyุ
His favorite moment, he said, was in 2013 while they were recording their final duet together called โYou Canโt Make Old Friends.โ At one point, he looked up and saw Parton was no longer at her microphone. Suddenly, she appeared by his side, and put her arms around his neck. โKenny, I think you should know,โ she told him. โI could never sing at your funeral.โ
Rogers laughed at the memory. โI went, โSo weโre assuming Iโm going firstุโ โ He chuckled again. โBut I love her for that. You never know what sheโs going to say, but it always comes from love.โ
Listening to the song, Partonโs train of thought makes sense โ the ballad includes the lines, โWhat will I do when youโre goneุ Whoโs gonna tell me the truthุ โฆ How will I sing when youโre goneุ Cause it wonโt sound the same.โ Those lyrics became even more poignant this past weekend, when Rogers died at age 81. Tributes to the country-pop superstar poured in, and on Saturday morning, Parton posted an emotional video on social media. She said she learned the news after turning on the TV.
โI loved Kenny with all my heart, and my heartโs broken,โ Parton said, choking up as she held a framed picture of the two of them. โI know youโre sad as I am. God bless you, Kenny.โ
After the news of Rogersโs death, his famed hit โThe Gamblerโ rocketed up to No. 1 on the iTunes charts. The No. 2 spotุ Karaoke favorite โIslands in the Stream,โ his iconic 1983 duet with Parton. But as much as people have loved the musical collaborations between Rogers and Parton, there is also a long-running obsession with their nearly four-decade friendship.
It was a favorite topic in interviews, and Rogers and Parton were constantly asked if they had ever been more than friends, even though they always said no. โWe all want you to get together!โ Gayle King said in 2013 when Rogers stopped by โCBS This Morning.โ
โWeโre both married. Why would you want us to get togetherุโ Rogers responded, smiling, as the anchors laughed and King quickly started to back off the question. โIn all fairness, Dolly and I have been accused of having an affair for the last 30 years. And we never did.โ He added that they indulged in some โharmlessโ flirting, but that was all.
What was most important, he said, was their friendship: โSheโs one of those rare people that if she walked in the door and I hadnโt seen her in five years, it would be like we were together yesterday.โ
The two first crossed paths in Nashville in the early days of their careers, and he helped her when she headlined a syndicated TV show in the 1970s.
โKenny was a big star, and I couldnโt get any people on my show,โ Parton told the Associated Press in 1990. โKenny said โIโll do it,โ and Iโll never forget it. Heโs always been there for me as a friend.โ
Kenny Rogers made life's rough edges feel smooth
Nearly a decade later, Rogers was in the recording studio with Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, who had just co-written โIslands in the Streamโ and decided to give it to Rogers. After a few days trying to record, Rogers didnโt like how it sounded and was ready to give up. According to Rogers, Gibb said, โYou know what we needุ We need Dolly Parton.โ
By coincidence, Rogers told People magazine, Parton happened to be the same studio that day. Rogersโs manager went to go find her. โShe came marching into the room, and once she came in and started singing, the song was never the same. It took on a personality of its own,โ Rogers said.
โIslands in the Streamโ became a massive hit when it was released in 1983 and fueled interest in Rogers and Parton as a duo โ they released a Christmas album and filmed a TV special and started touring together. โWe didnโt plan it. People just put us together because they liked us together,โ Parton said in 1986. โWe did that one song and out of that came years of concerts and friendship.โ
Their easygoing chemistry remained the same for decades, as they could quickly veer from joking (โSo this is my lead-in for me to talk about how handsome you are,โ Parton said dryly in a 2013 Great American Country interview when Rogers called her โgorgeousโ) to introspective: โOne of the things that affects a relationship when youโre working with someone is your upbringing and your background,โ Rogers said on an episode of Partonโs show in the โ80s, noting that they had similar family situations and religious beliefs. โSheโs a very special person who has a very special place in my life.โ
They collaborated on more duets through the years: โReal Loveโ in 1985; โLove is Strangeโ in 1990; Rogers recorded the Parton solo-written โUndercoverโ in 2003. And finally, โYou Canโt Make Old Friends,โ which was nominated at the 2014 Grammy Awards for country duo/group performance. Even though they didnโt write it, they considered it autobiographical.
โ[โIslands in the Streamโ] was a song about objective people. This was about us,โ Rogers said in the 2013 GAC special. โAnd I think that shouldnโt go unnoticed.โ
They clearly knew how meaningful their partnership was to fans โ Parton also used her tribute video on Saturday to comfort people about the worldโs current nightmarish situation.
โI know that we all know Kennyโs in a better place than we are today. But Iโm pretty sure heโs going to be talking to God sometime today if heโs ainโt already,โ she said. โAnd heโs going to be asking him to spread some light onto this darkness going on here.โ
(A previous version of this story said Partonโs 1970s TV show aired on the Nashville Network. This has been corrected.)

You never know how much you love somebody until theyโre gone. Iโve had so many wonderful years and wonderful times with my friend Kenny, but above all the music and the success I loved him as a wonderful man and a true friend.
