End of a 16-day science mission

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) -- NASA lost communication with space shuttle Columbia shortly before its scheduled landing on Saturday. It was unclear whether there were any other problems.

Mission Control reported no communication with the shuttle after 9 a.m. EST.

With security tighter than usual, space shuttle Columbia streaked toward a Florida touchdown Saturday to end a successful 16-day scientific research mission.

The early morning fog burned off as the sun rose, and Mission Control gave the seven astronauts the go-ahead to come home on time. "I guess you've been wondering, but you are 'go' for the de-orbit burn," Mission Control radioed at practically the last minute.

"We've taken all reasonable measures, and all of our landings so far since 9-11 have gone perfectly," said Lt. Col. Michael Rein, an Air Force spokesman.

Ilan Ramon, a colonel in Israel's air force and former fighter pilot, became the first man from his country to fly in space, and his presence resulted in an increase in security, not only for Columbia's January 16 launch, but also for its landing.

Space agency officials feared his presence might make the shuttle more of a terrorist target.

Columbia's crew -- Ramon and six Americans -- completed all of their 80-plus experiments in orbit.

They studied ant, bee and spider behavior in weightlessness as well as changes in flames and flower scents, and took measurements of atmospheric dust with a pair of Israeli cameras.

The 13 lab rats on board -- part of a brain and heart study -- face the guillotine following the flight so researchers can see up-close the effects of so much time in weightlessness.


The insects and other animals have a brighter, longer future: the student experimenters were going to get them back and many of the youngsters plan to keep them, almost like pets.

All of the scientific objectives were accomplished during the round-the-clock laboratory mission, and some of the work may be continued aboard the international space station, researchers said.

The only problem of note was a pair of malfunctioning dehumidifiers, which temporarily raised temperatures inside the laboratory to the low 80s, 10 degrees higher than desired.

History: Ramon, 47, is the first Israeli astronaut. A colonel and former fighter pilot in the Israeli Air Force, he saw combat experience in the Yom Kippur War in 1973 and the Lebanon War in 1982.

Dear Kostawi,
Apart from humanetarian dimention for which I appreciate your concern.Does this Israeli in a scientific mission or as a preparation for killing of hundreds of thousands in Iraq (not only six).
We never heared of Israel uses the Science for the sake of peace uses.

وقال مسؤول في البيت الابيض "جرى اطلاع الرئيس وهو يتابع الموقف".
وكان من المقرر ان يقضي بوش عطلة نهاية الاسبوع في منتجع كامب ديفيد الرئاسي.
واظهرت تغطية تلفزيونية عدة خيوط بيضاء في السماء قد تكون علامة على تحطم
المكوك لانه لا يرى عند هبوط المكوك في العادة سوى خط ابيض واحد.
وقالت ناسا انها ارسلت على وجه العجل وحدات انقاذ في تكساس للبحث عن المكوك
ورواده السبعة ومن بينهم رائد الفضاء ايلان رامون وهو اول رائد فضاء اسرائيلي.
وكولومبيا هو اقدم مكوك فضائي وقام باولى رحلاته عام 1981
وهذا اخطر حادث لمكوك فضائي منذ تحطم المكوك تشالنجر عام 1986

وأوقفت ناسا الرحلات المكوكية لحين تحديد سبب تحطم المكوك الذي تقوم بجمع
حطامه.
وقال بوش الذي أمر بتنكيس العلم الامريكي حدادا على الطاقم ان
الطاقم "لم يعد بسلام الى الارض .. لكن يسعنا أن ندعو أن يعودوا جميعا الى
الوطن بسلام" وهي عبارة كان الرئيس الامريكي الاسبق رونالد ريجان قد قالها
بشأن المكوك تشالنجر.
وكانت ناسا قد فقدت الاتصال بالمكوك بعد استكمال رحلته التي استمرت
16 يوما في نحو الساعة التاسعة صباحا بتوقيت شرق الولايات المتحدة 1400/
بتوقيت جرينتش/ بينما كان على ارتفاع 63 كيلومترا من الارض. وقالت ادارة
ناسا ان المكوك لم يبلغ عن اي صعوبات قبل فقد الاتصال به.
وقال رون ديتيمور مدير برنامج المكوك في مركز جونسون للفضاء ان
"المؤشرات الاولى على وجود مشكلة محتملة ظهرت قبل دقائق من الموعد المقرر
لهبوط المكوك.. وكانت أول المؤشرات فقد أجهزة الاستشعار .. أجهزة تحديد
درجة الحرارة في النظم الهيدروليكية في /الجانب/ الايسر".
وقال "وبعد ثوان ودقائق ظهرت عدة مشاكل أخرى تشمل فقد مؤشرات ضغط
/هواء/ الاطارات في جهاز /الهبوط/ الرئيسي الايسر".
وكان ليروي كين المسؤول في ناسا عن رحلة عودة المكوك قد سئل أول يوم
الجمعة عن ضرر محتمل بالجناح الايسر للمكوك يحتمل ان يكون قد وقع اثناء
عملية الاطلاق. وقال كين ان تحليلات المهندسين في ناسا اظهرت ان اي ضرر يحتمل
ان يكون قد وقع طفيف بالضرورة.
وافاد كثيرون من سكان تكساس بمشاهدة المكوك يتفكك ورؤية عدة خيوط من
الابخرة اثناء اتجاهه نحو الارض وسماع دوي هائل.
ومن المرجح ان يثير الحادث تساؤلات بشان عمر اسطول مواكيك الفضاء حيث
ان كولومبيا هو اقدمها وقام باولى رحلاته عام .1981 وكانت رحلات المكوك قد
توقفت 32 شهرا في اعقاب كارثة تشالنجر قبل ان تستانفها ناسا مرة اخرى.
كما اثار الحادث تساؤلات ايضا بشان ارسال الامدادات الى المحطة الفضائية
الدولية التي تعتبر سفن المكوك وسيلة الامداد الرئيسية اليها.
وتعهد بوش بأن يستمر برنامج الفضاء الامريكي. وقال ان المسعى الذي
توفوا من أجله سيستمر و"رحلتنا في الفضاء ستستمر".
وباقي افراد طاقم المكوك هم قائده ريك هازبند والطيار وليام مكول
والاخصائيان مايكل اندرسون وديفيد براون والاخصائيتان لوريل كلارك
وكالبانا تشاولا.
وتتزايد المخاوف من احتمال تسرب كيماويات سامة من الحطام في انحاء
تكساس. وقال مركز التحكم في مهمة المكوك في هيوستون "اي حطام يعثر عليه
في منطقة دالاس فورت وورث يتعين تفادي الاقتراب منه لاحتمال خطورته".
وفي ناكوجدوتشس في تكساس ورد تقرير عن العثور على احد ابواب المكوك
فيما يبدو.
وقالت فيكتوريا لافوليت المسؤولة بمجلس المدينة التي تبعد 230 كيلومترا
شمال شرقي هيوستون "هناك كثير من الحطام المتناثر في انحاء ناكوجدوتشس".
واجرى رواد المكوك السبعة عددا من التجارب العلمية قال علماء
ومسؤولون في ناسا انها كانت ناجحة. ولم يلتحم المكوك كولومبيا بالمحطة
الفضائية الدولية خلال هذه الرحلة.
وكان من المقرر ان تبدا الرحلة القادمة في سلسلة رحلات المكوك في اول
مارس اذار المقبل لتركيب جزء جديد في المحطة وهي رحلة المكوك اتلانتس بقيادة
رائدة الفضاء ايلين كولينز.
ومن المحتمل ان يصبح مصير المحطة التي تبلغ تكلفتها 95 مليار دولار وتقترب
من مرحلة استكمالها النهائية في مهب الريح بعد كارثة المكوك.
ويوجد بالمحطة ما يكفي الرواد الثلاثة المقيمين عليها من طعام وهواء
وماء لعدة شهور. لكن المحطة تحتاج الى زيارات المكوك لها من حين لاخر حتى تحتفظ
بمدارها حول الارض.
