Where did the Sudanese and West African folk influence come in؟

When I was 17, I told my mom I didn’t like the name Brittney. She was like, “O.K., I’ll give you a new name. I’ll call you Sudan.” I was always wearing some African-style necklace, or trying to find the African shops in Ohio to go thrifting. She called me her hippie child.
