Despite Sudan’s checkered diplomatic history with the United States, the Trump administration has an opportunity to recalibrate what could be a constructive relationship in a critical part of the world. In determining what a successful US-Sudanese relationship could look like, the administration has an opportunity to both serve US interests in Sudan and beyond and encourage peace and security for Sudan’s citizens.
In light of the Trump administration’s July 11 announcement to delay by three months a final decision on the course of US-Sudan relations, the Atlantic Council Sudan Task Force’s new report Sudan: A Strategy For Re-engagement argues for sustained and deepened US engagement with Sudan in the next three months and beyond. Doing so could both achieve US interests and support peace, security, and inclusive governance for the Sudanese people, including Sudan’s ethnic, religious, other minorities, and other marginalized groups.
