International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999 (30C/62).

On 16 May 2007 the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/61/266 called upon Member States "to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world". By the same resolution, the General Assembly proclaimed 2008 as the International Year of Languages, to promote unity in diversity and international understanding, through multilingualism and multiculturalism.

International Mother Language Day has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The date represents the day in 1952 when students demonstrating for recognition of their language, Bangla, as one of the two national languages of the then Pakistan, were shot and killed by police in Dhaka, the capital of what is now Bangladesh.

Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.

2015 is the 15th anniversary of International Mother Language Day.

أُعلن الاحتفال باليوم الدولي للغة الأم في مشروع القرار (30 C/DR.35) (ملف بصيغة الـ PDF المؤتمر العام لمنظمة الأمم المتحدة للتربية والعلم والثقافة (اليونسكو) في شهر تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر من عام 1999.

وفي 16 أيار/مايو 2007، أهابت الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة، في قرارها A/RES/61/266 (ملف بصيغة الـ PDF ، بالدول الأعضاء ’’التشجيع على المحافظة على جميع اللغات التي تستخدمها شعوب العالم وحمايتها‘‘. وأعلنت الجمعية العامة، في نفس القرار، سنة 2008 باعتبارها سنة دولية للغات لتعزيز الوحدة في إطار التنوع ولتعزيز التفاهم الدولي من تعدد اللغات والتعدد الثقافي.

ويُحتفل بهذا اليوم الدولي سنويا من شباط/فبراير 2000 من أجل تعزيز التعدد اللغوي والثقافي. ويرمز اختيار هذا التاريخ إلى اليوم الذي فتحت فيه الشرطة النار في مدينة دكا، عاصمة بنغلاديش حاليا، على تلاميذ خرجوا متظاهرين للمطالبة بالإعتراف بلغتهم الأم، البنغالية، كواحدة من لغتي البلاد الرسمية لما كان يعرف حينئذ بباكستان.

إن اللغات هي الأدوات الأقوى التي تحفظ وتطور تراثنا الملموس وغير الملموس . لن تساعد فقط كافة التحركات الرامية الى تعزيز نشر الألسن الأم على تشجيع التعدد اللغوي وثقافة تعدد اللغات، وإنما ستشجع أيضاً على تطوير وعي أكمل للتقاليد اللغوية والثقافية في كافة أنحاء العالم كما ستلهم على تحقيق التضامن المبني على التفاهم والتسامح والحوار. ويحتفل في عام 2015 بالذكرى السنوية الخامسة عشر لليوم الدولي للغة الأم.
