After their debut in DC 2 years ago at the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center, Alsarah and the Nubatones couldn't imagine having their debut album release without having a special celebration in Washington DC, aka 'little east-africa'.

So on March 28th at 8pm, you are all cordially invited to Tropicalia at 8pm for a very special Silt album release party with special guest DJ Underdog

The group's debut album titled Silt / طمي will be released world wide on March 11, 2014 on Wonderwheel Recordings. The Nubatones original composition Soukura (it’s late) is the first release off the album.

Inspired by the pentatonic scale and western soul music, and struck by a collective love for Nubian music, Alsarah and the Nubatones revisit Nubian songs of return, as well as popular songs from northern Sudan and southern Egypt, from the 1970s until today. While linguistically there has been a rapid arabization of that region, its retention of its musical culture has been steadfast.

Sudanese-born, Yemen-raised, Brooklyn-based Alsarah has been dubbed "the new star of Nubian pop" and one listen to her forthcoming Soukura EP more than justifies the designation. The singer, songwriter, and ethnomusicologist has a knack for creating songs that are the result of both study and experience, which encompass ancient ideas and brand-new sounds, that feel effortless although they require a great deal of skill to make. Her February 25 short-player not only captures the sound of Alsarah's incredible band, the Nubatones, it includes remixes from others in the Wonderwheel Recordings stable: African house artist Boddhi Satva, dub dude the Spy From Cairo, and Giant Step producer/DJ Nickodemus. Alsarah shared some words on the set: "'Soukura,' (it's late) is an original composition by Alsarah and the Nubatones that speaks of tender secrets and the longing for loved ones far away. It's a song about speaking of our desires without shame and secrecy and without the need to seek permission. The remixes as a whole captured the dark twinkling of the sounds of 'Soukura' and lay a beautiful groundwork to ease those unfamiliar with our sound into the world of East-African Retro-Pop."
