A new group of bats has been described after scientists studied a rare black and white specimen from South Sudan. Researchers from Bucknell University, Pennsylvania, US, Fauna and Flora International and the South Sudanese Ministry of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism found the bat after being drawn to its unique pattern of spots and stripes. "I knew the second I saw it that it was the find of a lifetime," said Associate Professor of Biology DeeAnn Reeder. Analysis revealed the bat had been found before but was incorrectly classified. Its uniqueness sets it apart from other bats, prompting biologists to describe a whole new group, or genus, named Niumbaha.
