Readout for the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Ali Ahmed Karti, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Sudan

The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Ali Ahmed Karti, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Sudan. They discussed relations between Sudan and South Sudan, as well as the situations in Darfur, Abyei, Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile States. The Secretary-General welcomed the positive outcomes of the 3 September Summit between President Al-Bashir and President Salva Kiir. He expressed his deep concern about increasing tensions in Abyei, the protracted conflict in Darfur and the ongoing fighting in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile States. He underscored the need to ensure humanitarian access and UNAMID’s freedom of movement in Darfur. The Secretary-General urged the Government of the Sudan to engage in credible and inclusive dialogue with all opposition groups to address the root causes of conflict in the Sudan.
