Quote: APA-Gaborone (Botswana) The Botswana president, Ian Khama has described Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir’s “failed leadership” as being like a cancer to his country, which he said was the reason Botswana, had urged the President of Malawi to deny him entry to her country during the next African Union Summit in July. Speaking during a luncheon for the Liberian President, Ellen Sirleaf-Johnson, on Monday night, President Khama said Al-Bashir who has been indicted to appear before the International Criminal Court (ICC) should not add any more crimes against humanity to his record. “With regard to the situation in Sudan and South Sudan, Botswana remains concerned about the escalation of violence, and urges the two countries to exercise restraint to avert a looming war between the two republics. We also call upon the two countries to resolve their differences through peaceful means,” said Khama. He said it is Botswana’s hope that the international community will adopt the necessary measures aimed at enforcing the African Union roadmap. “The Government of Botswana however despite this call does note that in the lead up to the current insecurity between the two countries, there have been incidents of provocation and aggression, as well as deeply offensive remarks emanating from Sudan and its leadership against South Sudan,” said Khama. He added that Sudan needs to step back from its years of confrontation against its own people and its neighbours and become a responsible member of the African Union and the international community.
