- EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton Tueseday called on Sudan to uphold the Geneva Conventions after the governor of a flashpoint state urged soldiers to take no prisoners during battle.

"I am alarmed at video footage showing Ahmed Haroun, the Governor of Southern Kordofan, urging Sudanese soldiers to take no prisoners during fighting in Southern Kordofan and a Government of Sudan spokesman defending these statements," Ashton said in a statement



"A deliberate policy of taking no prisoners during armed conflict constitutes a war crime," she said days after the video was broadcast by the Al-Jazeera news channel.

"The Geneva Conventions prohibit ordering that there shall be no survivors. The Government of Sudan must ensure that the Sudan Armed Forces abide by international humanitarian law at all times."

Guerrillas from the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) have been fighting government forces since June in South Kordofan, a state bordering the new nation of South Sudan.
