THE INSTITUTE Condemns Sudanese Government Bombing of Heiban Bible College

Alexandria, VA (February 2, 2012) - THE INSTITUTE on Religion and Public Policy denounces the bombing by the Sudanese Air Force of the Heiban Bible College in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. Eight bombs were dropped, destroying two buildings on the campus. "These terrible actions by the Sudanese government cannot and must not be tolerated," stated Joseph K. Grieboski, Founder and Chairman of the Board of THE INSTITUTE on Religion and Public Policy. "We offer our thoughts, prayers, and support to the Heiban Bible College and surrounding community." The college was bombed during the afternoon on Wednesday, February 1. Wednesday was the first day of school so the campus was full of students, teachers, and families; however, no one was injured during the bombings. The severity of damage to campus is not yet known. "The Government of Sudan has an ongoing history of terrific violence and use of deadly force," commented Mr. Grieboski. "The Government of Sudan is ramping up operations in South Kordofan and Blue Nile." As the Act for Sudan coalition has stated, "Khartoum, in its war with SPLM-N rebels in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, has attacked civilians, indiscriminately bombed populations, and used starvation as a weapon. The result has been a deterioration in the humanitarian situation which could become a famine in the coming months." "We call on the international community to intervene and take all appropriate measures necessary to ensure the safety and security of the civilian population in Sudan," Mr. Grieboski concluded. ###
