October 12, 2011 First-hand Accounts of Violence and Growing IDP/Refugee Problem in Sudan’s Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile region2 p.m. Thursday, October 13 2359 Rayburn HOB
The Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission will hold a briefing to hear first-hand accounts of the continued violence in the Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile regions of Sudan and the plight of the thousands of internally displaced persons and refugees.
Speakers will be:
Ryan Boyette, citizen journalist and former humanitarian aid worker currently living and working in the Nuba Mountains
Jonathan Hutson, Director of Communications, ENOUGH Project and spokesperson for George Clooney’s Satellite Sentinel Project
Daniel Sullivan, Director of Policy and Government Relations for United to End Genocide
Background:
In June 2011, violence broke out in Sudan’s Southern Kordofan state between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North. The SAF continues to indiscriminately bomb civilian and agricultural areas while its ground forces have been accused of killing individuals based on their political and ethnic identities. Serious violations of international law and human rights continue— including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, illegal detention, and attacks against civilians. An estimated 200,000 people have been displaced and about thousands more have sought refuge in camps in South Sudan or Ethiopia. The bipartisan Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission was established in the U.S. House of Representatives to educate Members of Congress on human rights issues and advocate on behalf of human rights defenders world-wide.
