Mr Diaa Ismail is the first foreign graduate of the Master programme “Management for Organisational Excellence”

What and where have you studied and worked, and what are you studying and working right now. Tell us in short about your family.

I am Diaa-eldin Ismail from Sudan. This year I’m going to turn the age of 44. I am a construction engineer, and I also hold Chinese language bachelor degree. I have just graduated my master program “Management for Organisational Excellence” (MOE) in School of Management at New Bulgarian University.

For 4 years (1992–1998) I worked as site engineer and projects manager in Sudan for Danfodio Construction Company.

After I came back from China, and because of my new qualification in Chinese language, I continued my work in the same company but as a coordinator between the Chinese and Sudanese companies. At this time both companies were working on one of the biggest construction projects in Africa, which is Merawi Dam-in north of Sudan.

I have also worked as a tutor of Chinese language in Khartoum University.

I am married with a Sudanese diplomat, now she is the head of the mission of the Sudanese embassy in Sofia. Our family has three sons and a daughter, who has born in Sofia.

Why did you choose to study Master programme “Management for Organisational Excellence”?

I realised that accumulation of many years of work experience is not enough to put me in the way of business excellence. Before I registered in this program I read about its courses and by comparing it with other programs, I realized that it is a good chance to learn about the newest concepts and practices of the management, and to step in the path which leads to the business excellence .

Describe three things that make you like this program?

Firstly, the program covers a broad area in the management field. Secondly, comparing to other management frameworks I found that the EFQM model, which is fundamental for this program, is very useful for organizational evaluation and assessment. Thirdly, the spirit of co-operation in the team of School of management, specifically in MOE program.

What could you recommend to The School of Management and especially to the Master programme “MOE”?

Based on my personal experience, I would like to suggest to you to focus your attention on the diplomatic staff from different countries and their families who are working and living here in Sofia and to introduce this program to them in attractive way.

How do you think, did something change in you during the study?

I extended my fundamental understanding of management in direction to holistic approach which let me know how to diagnose and find the solution for the organizational problems.

Do you have leisure time?

Of course! I spend it with my kids, traveling across Europe and watching – on TV- football matches.

What opportunities gave you the study at The School of Management-NBU, and the distance learning in particular?

The SM at NBU, by offering this program, enabled me to study up-to-date management models and enables me also to know how to reflect and implement what I have learnt from this program into my work. This Master program gave me a chance to interact with people from different continents, and to let them know about our culture, social relationships and potential resources in Sudan.

Could you recall the most difficult moments during your study?

The most difficult moments were when I was preparing my homework and during my work on the master thesis.

And the most pleasant things thing during your study were…?

… When I successfully defended my master thesis and the assessment committee congratulated me.

What would you like to say to your colleagues at The School of Management?

What I want to say to all students of The School of Management! The Master’s degree is not the final station in the journey to management excellence.

What are your future plans?

My plans are to try to find a way to populate the EFQM model in Sudan and to implement what I’ve learned from MOE in my own business in Sudan.

What insights of Bulgaria – both good and bad – will you take living the country?

I and my family enjoy the spring and summer times, while we suffer a little bit during winter.

The Sudanese and Bulgarian community has some similarities in terms of extended families and the emotional connection with their home towns or villages.

What I do not like – about a minority of the Bulgarians – is their negative impression about foreigner.
