Maktoob DUBAI - Gas-rich Qatar has been instrumental in a new space discovery, a gas planet similar to Jupiter, according to newspaper reports. Qatari astronomer Khalid al-Subai collaborated with British and American universities in finding the "hot-Jupiter" type planet, now named Qatar-1b, the Doha-based Peninsula newspaper reported. The planet was discovered through photographs taken by Qatari-funded wide-angle cameras located in New Mexico this year, the newspaper said. The images were analysed by the Qatar Foundation and astronomers from the universities of St Andrews, Leicester and Keele in Britain, and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. "The discovery of Qatar-1b is a great achievement - one that further demonstrates Qatar's commitment to becoming a leader in innovative science and research," Subai was quoted as saying. Qatar-1b is a gas giant 20% larger than Jupiter in diameter and has a temperature of around 1,100 degrees Celsius, the report said. "With Qatar's new planet-hunting cameras, we should soon be finding smaller planets as well, hot Saturns and hot Neptunes, and ultimately, with a different technique, cool Earths," St Andrews astronomer Prof Keith Horne said in a report by the Financial Times newspaper. The discovery marks a new milestone for the small Gulf nation, which is better known for its vast gas reserves and buying up trophy assets overseas. Qatar has invested billions of dollars of its energy wealth in infrastructure, sports and cultural projects over the years to become a well-known nation from relative obscurity. Qatar stunned the sporting world earlier this month when football's governing body FIFA chose the country to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Qatar Foundation, headed by Sheikha Mozah, the wife of Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, is one of the vehicles of promoting Qatar through culture, health, education and scientific projects.
