تعد اليزابيث إداورد زوجة المرشح السابق لمنصب نائب الرئيس الأمريكي جون ادوارد من أكثر الشخصيات المحترمة التي تعرضت خلال نكسات متلاحقة بدأت برحيل ابنها بعمر الستة عشر ومن ثم إصابتها بسرطان الثدي وبعد ذلك خيانة زوجها وإنجابه من امرأة أخرى.

في كتابها الأخير " التعافي" ، الذي حظي باهتمام واسع ، تحاول اليزابيث أن تستعرض كل هذه الأزمات الكبيرة وكيف استطاعت أن تتجاوزها لتصل إلى مرحلة التعافي ( أحد التعليقات على كتابها قالت انها لم تتجاوزها ولكنها تركت ثقبا داخل فؤادها لن يملأ). وكم عبرت اليزابيث أنها تريد أن تنقل تجربتها للآخرين بحيث تكون مفيدة لهم .

الكتاب ، بحسب ما وصفته جريدة لوس أنجلوس تايمز ، يجعلك تفهم عميقا شخصيتها ولكنك ستقدر القوى التي يمكن اتخاذها للنجاة . استخراج القوى الداخلية العميقة لمواجهة أكثر الأزمات مأساوية مسألة مهمة جدا خصوصا لكل من يمر بقصص صعبة مثل قصص اليزابيث. عام 1996 مات ابنها ويد اثر تعرضه لحادث سيارة ، تحدثت المؤلفة باسهاب عن هذه الحادثة التي غيرت حياتها. وبعد ذلك جاء خبر اكتشافها إصابتها بمرض سرطان الثدي في ذات الوقت الذي كان تشارك فيه زوجها حملته الانتخابية مما دفعها بحسب ما تقول لإخفاء الخبر عنه. وتشرح بعد ذلك ظروف العلاج الصعبة والأشعة والمواعيد الأمر الذي قالت إنه أول شيء فكرت فيه عندما اكتشفت إصابتها بالمرض.

ولكن الموضوع الأكثر إثارة الذي غطته وسائل الإعلام بكثافة هو خبر علاقة زوجها بامرأة أخرى هي ريلي هانتر التي أنجب منها طفلا . على الرغم من أهمية القضية إلا أن اليزابيث لم تعلق عليها كثيرا في الوقت الذي امتنعت عن ذكر اسم هنتر في أي فقرة . ويبدو أنها ترفض حتى في اللقاءات التلفزيونية والإذاعية أن تنطق باسمها في إشارة واضحة إلى رغبتها في التجاهل حيث تكتفي اليزابيث بقول ذلك " الشخص". فردا على سؤال إذاعي وجه لها عما قامت به بعد اكتشاف خيانة زوجها ، قالت :" هناك من قال ،انني ضربت زوجي أو الشخص الآخر. ولكن كل من يريد أن يعرف عليه أن يقرأ الكتاب".

ولكن في الحقيقة هذا التجاهل لم يضر كثيرا بصورة هنتر التي استطاعت بذكائها أن تروض المذيعة أوبرا وينفري التي توبخ الرجال والنساء الخائنين ولكنها مع ذلك استسلمت لهانتر التي قالت صرحت بحبها لأدوادرز وأن حياته تعاني من أزمات مع زوجته اليزابيث قبل أن تعرفه.

الزوج ادوارد هو أكثر الخاسرين حتى في هذا الكتاب حيث قال أحد الملاحظين ان اليزابيث تحدث بود وبالأسماء عن أشخاص متعددين ، ولكن عندما يأتي الدور على أداوردز فإنها تفضل أن تقول " أباك" أو " الأب" بحسب ما يفرضه السياق.

وصفت مجلة النيوزويك هذا الكتاب الصغير بأنه سيبقيك طوال الليل يقظاَ ولكن كما تقول أحد التعليقات على الكتاب انه يشرح أننا عندما نمر بأزمات فإننا إما نختار أن نكون ضحايا أو متعافين. من الواضح ماذا اختارت هذه المرأة الشجاعة.

Video Transcript: >> Reporter: Today we learned new details about the last days of elizabeth edwards' life. In her final hours, she was surrounded by the people she loved most, her son jack, just 10 years old. Daughters emma claire, 12, and kate 28. Also there her estranged husband john, and a handful of close friends, including jennifer palmieri, who spoke about edwards' children. >> To say that she prepared them for her death i don't think is really correct. I think she wanted to prepare them to live a good life. >> Reporter: Edwards were determined that her last days with her children be joyful. >> She was able to have normal, you know, good night mom, come and give me a kiss, going to school, it was not a sad life. If you can imagine that. >> Reporter: Elizabeth edwards knew she would only have a few years with her young children, as she told katie couric in 2007 right after edwards learned her cancer had returned. >> I've often said that the most important thing you can give your children, wings. Because you're not going to always be available to bring food to the nest, sometime they'll have to be able to fly by themselves. >> Reporter: Although a successful lawyer in her own right, edwards built her life around her children. When her 16-year-old son wade died in a car accident, both she and john quit practicing law and turned to politics and public service. >> If you want universal health care plan, who do you trust to actually get it done? >> Reporter: And for the sake of her children edwards put aside her anger at her husband's well-known infidelity, as she told nate in her last televised interview. >> I see the father of my children, and it's really important to me, particularly since I have a terminal disease, this is the person at some point who will take over the primary parenting. >> Reporter: Elizabeth edwards' funeral will take place here saturday at the family church in raleigh. She will be buried at a cemetery next to her son wade. Elaine quijano, raleigh, north carolina. >> Couric: Still ahead, a very rough ride for the passengers on a cruise to antarctica.
