A proposal for the establishment of South Sudan Liberal Party (SSLP) By: Adil Abdel Aati Due to the rapid developments in Sudan and the approaching date of the referendum on self-determination for the people of southern Sudan; and the possibility of emerging of a new State of South Sudan; the members of the LDP from Southern Sudan had take the initiative of establishing a new political entity under the name of the South Sudan Liberal Party.
Making this proposal, we do not present it without difficulty; having in mind that the LDP has been established as a unionist party with the vision of gathering all the people of Sudan from different regions in a United Party working in a United Country. However, the political reality require the Southern Sudanese Liberals to establish their own independent political entity in the South, in order to contribute in a more positive way on the political development of southern Sudan and on the perspectives of the future relationship between the various entities of Sudan after the referendum.
Objective: The objective of the formation of the SSLP should to be: 1. Organize and unite liberals of southern Sudan (members and friends of the LDP and other liberals) in order to activate their participation in the political mobility in southern Sudan, 2. Strengthen the ties of comradeship with the Liberals in other regions of Sudan, 3. Building ties with liberals in Africa and all over the world.
Mission: SSLP mission is to: 1. Contribute to the building of a secular, democratic and liberal South Sudan; 2. Defend the rights of citizens and the principles of peaceful coexistence between them, 3. Prevent the outbreak of a new war between northern and southern Sudan, as well as prevent internal clashes in the South and establish a strong culture of peace . 4. Participating in establishing a confederation for the Great Horn of Africa countries, which should include all Sudanese entities that will arise after the referendum in southern Sudan.
Values: SSLP should combine the diversity of ethnicities, cultures and religions in Southern Sudan. SSLP would aim at the development and empowerment of the citizens of South Sudan, in order to establish a free society and a democratic state.
The relationship between SSLP and LDP: The relationship between SSLP and LDP should be a relationship of camaraderie and fraternal relations based on agreement on strategic objectives and programs. Hence organizational autonomy should exist between the two entities. Taking into account the organizational autonomy of the two parties, and in order to stabilize the relations of comradeship and the spirit of peaceful coexistence, the SSLP proposed the principle of Exchange of Membership. This principle means that members of the SSLP who moved to or are living in northern Sudan, should automatically become members LDP; and Vice Versa, members of LDP who will move to or who live in Southern Sudan would automatically become members of the SSLP.
Plan of action for SSLP establishing: We proposed these simple steps to be held till 1st January 2010, in order to establish SSLP: 1. Dissemination of the idea among Southern members of the Liberal Democratic Party of and their friends and providing consultation with them about the idea. 2. Start to work on the basic documents of organization: The Manifesto and Constitution of SSLP. 3. Submit an application to register the party as a political party in Juba 4. Apply to join the Africa Liberal Network. 5. Organize the SSLP first General Convention, with the participation of the LDP and ALN. 6. Adopt a Strategic Plan and a short Plan of Action in the convention. 7. Begin independent political and organizational work.
