Almost every one among the 40 participants in the room was thinking about what Altayeb Salih had said befor:
From where they bring these people!

The annual 29th Conference of Sudan Studies Association convened today at the Perdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana
The Sudan Embassy sent 3 representatives this year: 2 from the Security section in addition to the Deputy Ambassador

The 'infamous' Mohamed Suleiman made the history of diplomacy so dwarfed today... he acted like a child in couple of times by intrrupting my presentation and I had to ask him firmly to shut up and listen.

My presentation was about the proposed Truth Committees and a role for the SSA to play.
in the proposal of GATS

After presenting a well-prepared Power Point with strong evidences on the history of the Inqaz violence, the so-called Deputy Consular
Attache commented the following'
"Violence is not only in Sudan. It's everywhere in the world"
That was his justification for the Ghost Houses and torture testimonies presented.
When I gave my personal testimony of torture he disgustingly laughed out loud and said
"We don't believe it"
In the break, a young graduate Sudanese student grabbed him to where I was standing and challenged him to speak directly to me and he did!
he asked me whether I was myself tortured, which I said yes and he looked at me in disbelief.
So, I asked him this 'challenging' question: Do you know who tortured me?
He said: Who?

I said: Your boss, Nafi'3 Ali Nafi3

The young Sudanese challenged him to say any thing, but the poor guy said, we need to talk about this!
. I told him that I was not ready to speak to him unless he went inside and openly issue an apology of what he said about not believeing what I said
I challenged him, earlier, during my presentation to stand up and publicly apologize for any role he played indirectly in the crime of torture, e.g. by silence or as by-stander
I emphasized the world 'idirectly' and added that if he got involved directly, then I do not want his apology here and he can't be part of the proposed Truth Committee

My presentation was on behalf of the Group Against Torture in Sudan-GATS to announce the Truth Committees initiative in Diaspora.

The Deputy Ambassador, Fattahelrahman Ali Mohamed, added more insults to the Sudanese diplomacy when he asked me, politely, why I did not talk about other positive things in Sudan!
Apparently he missed the whole point of the Session Theme, not only my presentation that was speaking about the Ghost Houses Era. He may wanted me to speak about some 'positive' aspects of torture!

Safawat, the junior security officer, did not speak today... may be he was reserved for the second coming 2 days left of the conference...

I'm wondering how the torture survivors will be able to deal with such people while implementing the concept of Truth and Reconciliation!

أنا كنت في الماضي من الذين يحضرون مؤتمر الدراسات السودانية، خصوصا عندما يتم عقده بمنطقة واشنطن العاصمة أو الساحل الشرقي . ولكن للحقيقة وللتاريخ. سفارة النظام لم تكن تدعى أو تشارك في المؤتمر . فما هو السبب الذي دعى القائمين على المؤتمر الى تغير نهج المؤتمر وتقديم دعوة الى سفارة النظام ؟

Hello Deng,
The Sudan Studies Association is an open membership org based on its 501 c 3 status.
I attended most of the annual conferences since 1995 and always the Embassy was represented there by one member but not as embassy official.
Safawat was always there, recrodinga nd writing his report.
This year, there was 3 of them, and someone said there was another undercover member!
Unfortunately, all their expenses, including membership dues and travel expenses are paid by the tax payers... but isn't this true also about the cost of torture tools in the Ghost houses?

وأنا من المهتمين بجمع الورقات التي تقدمها مجموعة العلماء من أمثالكم سنويا
والتي تعني أنكم تهتمون بوطننا الغالي... أنتم الذين بكم الوطن والإنسانية تزدخر

وأنا معك في أنه لقاء أكاديمي وعلمي وتخصصي بحت... ومفتوح لجميع من يهتم بالشأن السوداني

ولكني أستغرب وأتعجب لمشاركة ضباط أمن ومخابرات السفارة في مثل هذة المؤتمرات
بل تجدني في غاية التعجب والزهول من تداخلهم الفظ هذا معكم وبصورة فاضحة وغير مسؤلة
وتفتقر لأدنى شروط المهنية الدبلوماسية... وإحترام الأعراف المحددة للتعامل الدبلوماسي
وأدابه... وأهمها أسلوب التعامل وإستخدام اللغة الرفيعة في الأرض المضيفة!

أنا مؤمن بأن سكرتارية المؤتمر سمحت لهم بالحضور بصفة مراقب... من باب التعامل مع الجميع
ومن أجل توضيد لغة الحوار الإنساني الحر... وتماشيا مع مبدأ حرية الرأي والتعبير التي ننعم بها في هذة البلاد

ولكنهم لا يعون لمثل هذا الأمر... فمشاركة هؤلاء الضباط الأمنيين هي رسالة لكم
وتعني أننا سنلاحقكم حتى ولو كنتم تنعمون في نعيم الحرية الأمريكية!

نحن ندين مثل هذة التصرفات الشاذة... ونطالب السكرتارية بتحديد لائحة المشاركة مستقبلا
كما أطالبهم برفع شكوى عاجلة لوزارة الخارجية الأمريكية للتحقيق في هذا الأمر
والذي نعتبره سلوكا مشينا ضد التجمع ويشكل خطرا محققا لكيانه وإستمراريته

واليوم يتداخل في ملتقى أكاديمي بعنجهية وعقلية ضابط المخابرات ذي الأسلوب الفظ
لم بنى بيوت الذل وإهانة الأنسان المعروفة ببيوت الأشباح
ويبدو أنك أصبته في مقتل فأخذ يصرخ بلا وعي مكذبا لعالم جليل مثلك
ومثله لا يعرف أدب الحوار... ولم يسمع بالمبادئ الأساسية لأسلوب التخاطب الدبلوماسي البليغ

I continued to expose this arrogant security thug today and will expose him more.

I declined to shake his hand publicly this morning until he issues a public apology inside the Conference main room for his behavior of denial yesterday.
This made him angry, mad and he would have showed or acted differently if he was in his comfort zone domain, i.e. the HQ of Security. I also denied him to sit at one table with me when he tried to join a larger group at the lunch. I explained to him loudly that I do not want to have him at one table with me until he makes a public apology. I explained also to a graduate student that I would not wait to have this regime put on trial. I will start the acccountability process now.
I hope all people would show a strong action against these scumbags who dare TO MAKE JOKE ABOUT TORTURE SURVIVORS
yes, we may need to negotiate with them to take our rights but it should be on our own terms.


I appreciate to send more info via email, if you prefer not to share it publicly, on the following points:
* Where and when he made his arrogant claim of Buying any Sudanese in Diaspora
* Any proof that he was part of Kalma Camp leadership, dates, etc
* any threats, no matter small were, he made against any member of the community- we will protect the identity of the complainant.

We need to have a strong case when we submit our complaint to the State Department.

I always believe that some of our Sudanese social niceties get us in such awkward position those Zumala in DC put themselves in. Social Boycot is a tool been in use by activists allover the world.., I know it brings some difficult awkward moment with it but this what makes a human rights defender a human rights advocate.

Some of us may need to take stronger social boycott action especially those who personall suffered more than the rest of us... some will make statement, and some will refuse to engage in social dinner if they can...and they could have done this if the story went as reported here on this Board.

Unfortunately it was not recorded on video...this is the nature of SSA conference; no recroding beyond the paper abstract on the website: www.SudanStudies.org
however, all these regrettable incidents were witnessed by many Sudanese and Sudanist researchers...

I really missed you ya ustaz/ Mannan in this conference for your shining history in confronting these lies that made Sudanese diplomacy very dwarfed and ashamed...

I hope you will work with the DC activists to bring this unprofessional behavior to the US State Department and to the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Sudan. After all, Sudan's reputation needs to be saved!

I aksed the Security Colonel Mohamed suleiman this genuine question:
Why you had not and do not ask detainees politely during investigation inside your Ghost Houses? have you thought about doing this instead of sexually torturing them?
He replied that he's not responsible of what happened in these places!
I alsked again, in fron of 2 witnesses, do you say as a head of a Security Station in Malakal or Nyala you did not know about these places?

HERE IS a new update on the SSA Conference Episode in West Lafayette, Indiana

In a response to a person I do respect, i accepted his mediation between me and the Securuity Colonel Mohamed Sulieman.
I asked for a public apology, which i did not get and he, the Security Colonel, wanted to be outside in the corridor. Then I insisted at least to be inside the Photo Exhibit room and in the presence of another respected community leader. He reluctantly accepted and came to the room.
The Mediation started and did not go well for the following reasons:

* I rejected shaking hands with him again before a Public Apology for his sarcasm and denial of torture.
* He declined to say that he did not torture any one in his custody since he joined the National Security Aparatus

It was useless to continue the mediation with a person most probably committed this disgusting crime and does not want even to apologize for his act.

The proposed Truth Committees in diaspora are going to be very hard to walk with such denial. Khalid Musa, his predecessor, was smarter when he had stood up and denounced torture in the previous SSA Conference in Santa Clara, CA in 2005

this Google earth image made the security colonel Mohamed Suleiman to 'go banana' as the expression in US
He started to make a childish noise and loudly protested a nd denied the existence of such places
I gave a detailed description to the place and where it's located:
@ the junction of three streets: Tigani Elmahi; Ali Dinar and Alnijomi streets.

What more proof you need ?
