New Arrest and Detention of The leader of the Popular Congress Party

Sudan Organization Against Torture (SOAT) expresses its grave concern over the new arrest of Dr. Hassan Al-Turabi, leader of the Popular Congress Party (PCP) and four employees of Rai Al Shaab, a Sudanese opposition newspaper.

Abuzar Al Amin, Nagi Dahab, Ashraf Abdelaziz, and Abu Baker Al Sammani were arrested on Saturday in Khartoum, the same day as opposition leader Hassan Al Turabi, by the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS).

Gravely concerned about the continuing intimidation and harassment of members of the Sudanese political parties and the mass media in Sudan, SOAT condemns the arbitrary arrests, detentions and harassment of these persons and the Sudanese authorities’ strong clampdown on freedom of expression.

Please write to the authorities in Sudan urging them to:

Order the immediate release of all the detainees in the absence of valid legal charges, or if legitimate charges exist, bring them before an impartial tribunal and guarantee procedural rights at all times.

Cease the harassment and intimidation of members of Sudanese political members and leaders and members of the Sudanese media.

Guarantee the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression and association throughout Sudan in accordance with its constitutional obligations and international human rights standards.
