Upper Nile NCP Offices Set for Closure as Mass Defections Hit Party
The number of defectors to the SPLM in Upper Nile has now grown to 356, with reports emerging of a possible closure of the National Congress Party (NCP) offices in the state.17 May 2010 By Daniel Thon

MALAKAL, 17 May 2010 (Gurtong) – Last week, the party received several NCP members from different counties in the state.

They were received at the Dr John Garang de Mabior Hall at the party’s state secretariat by the State SPLM Chairman Dok Jok who paid tribute to the Government of Southern Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the party Secretary-General Pagan Amum who were present.

He expressed hope that the new members will join the SPLM in its vision of uniting South Sudanese in the walk to towards the referendum.

“On behalf of the party, I warmly welcome you to the SPLM and commend you for the noble step you have taken”, said Jok.

The acting SPLM State Secretary-General Suzker Kuon Deng affirmed that the party’s doors are open to any peace-loving Sudanese and called for the co-operation of the new party members.

Former NCP member-turned-SPLM member Joseph Bol Chan said he switched camps in a bid to help SPLM develop South Sudan as it walks towards secession.

The former NCP Member of the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly and former Chairperson of the Greater Upper Nile NCP Desk Southern Sudan called for unity amongst all South Sudanese in order to realise SPLM’s goals.

The former NCP members said they abandoned their party owing to its reluctance in the full implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

“Since the conclusion of the CPA, NCP policies have become irrelevant in South Sudan. Essentially, those drawing the policies were not Southerners and had their own interests. That is why we have defected from the NCP, especially after its dismal performance in last month’s general elections”, said the Ulang NCP representative Wal Bouth Rambang.

He added that the NCP has been dilly-dallying in the implementation of the key provisions of the CPA including borders, the referendum and transparency of oil revenues.

“After serious evaluation of the NCP policies in South Sudan and its implementation of the CPA, its co-brain child, the natural conclusion is that the NCP does mean well for the people of South Sudan. As such we are resigning en masse from the NCP”, said Rambang.

Following the resignations, NCP offices in Fashoda, Manyo, Panyikang, Makal and Ulang counties will soon be closed as plans are being put in place to close all the party’s offices in the state.
