وهى تعنى ايضا بتسليط الضوء على القهر السياسى والرقابة على

الكتاب والصحفيين فى مختلف انحاء المعمورة

وقد تسلمت الزميلة عواطف الجائزة من

منظمة هيومان رايت ووتش التى تتولى ادارة امر الجائزة

In addition to offering individuals financial assistance, by highlighting individual cases, they are intended to help focus attention on repression and censorship around the world. The grant program is funded by the estate of American playwright Lillian Hellman. Ms. Hellman’s bequest was prompted by her experiences and those of her companion, the novelist Dashiell Hammett, during the anti-Communist paranoia in the United States after World War II. Hellman and Hammett were both interrogated about their political beliefs and affiliations by Congressional committees. Hellman suffered professionally and had trouble finding work for a number of years. Hammett served time in prison. The executors of Ms. Hellman’s estate asked Human Rights Watch to administer a fund to meet the terms of her will. Over the past 20 years, Ms. Hellman’s bequest has helped more than 600 writers from 91 countries .
