M. Sc. in Gender and Development and M.Sc. in Gender and Peace Studies
Mandate, Scope and Objectives

The Institute of Women Gender and Development Studies Mandate
Institute of Women, Gender and Development Studies is mandated by Ahfad University for Women to offer undergraduate and graduate courses and degrees on gender related especailizations. Further, other cross sectional, multidisciplinary studies such as peace; good governance and human rights especilizations could be integrated or offered as specilizations for graduate degrees, courses or for research.
The Institute of Women, Gender and Development Studies has started an MSc. on Gender and Development since 1997 to date. It is a program for 18 months of (24 credit hours by courses and 12 CH by thesis). The institute is proposing to have a new program of a two track M.Sc. degrees.
Ahfad University for Women has signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nation University of Peace to start in the new academic year of 2008 an M.Sc. on Gender and Peace Studies.
The two programmes are mandated by Ahfad University for Women commitment to world class higher education through strengthening of international, regional and national links with universities and institutes that offer similar programmes and have same vision.

1- The Scope of the New Program:
A Two-Track, Masters of Science Program which is broken down into two emphases, with options for specialization in one of two broad disciplines:
• M. Sc. Gender and Peace Studies
• M. Sc. Gender and Development.

The programme is intensive. It will be accomplished within four semesters (a total of 16 months). The programme includes a number of foundation and core compulsory courses, and electives, for a total of 39 credits.

2- Objectives of the M.Sc. Gender and Peace Studies Program:
In specific terms, the Gender and Peace Studies' Masters Degree will achieve the following objectives:
1. To empower women to become more effective players in the processes of development and peace with the clear understanding that conflict, violence, and war have a variety of impacts upon men and women that, while comparable, are not the same.
2. To provide a solid education in the prevention, management, resolution and transformation of conflicts, including post-conflict interventions from a gender perspective.
3. To broaden the base of theoretical and practical approach on the field of gender and peace studies.
4. To prepare students to work with academia, media, government officials, INGO’s, NGO’s and at the wider community regionally and internationally where a deep understanding of these issues is critical.

Objectives of the M.Sc. Gender and Development Programme
The major objectives of this programme are:
1. Provision of courses leading to the award of the M.Sc. degree in Gender and Development in order to meet the pressing demand for such specialization in government, media, INGOs, NGO and the local country.
2. Provide solid education and training for cadres as gender-sensitive policy makers and planners.
3. Enrichment of publications through research findings on GAD as necessary data for planning on human development issues.
4. Promotion of student's agency and empowerment to achieve social transformation.
5. Strengthening of regional and international links with other universities and institutes that offer similar programmes.

3. Duration of Study:
The Master’s Degree is composed by a set of intertwining courses and a practical project that offers a combination of theoretical and practical knowledge.
The Masters (Gender and Development and Gender and Peace Studies) are conducted over three semesters of 15 weeks each and a summer semester of nine weeks, or 16 months period to accumulate 39 Credit Hours, as per AUW policies governing the award of graduate degrees.
In terms of course assignments per academic calendar, the proposed Study Plan is broken down in terms of Semester offerings in the following manner:
1. In Semester One students take Common Four Foundation Courses (4x3=12 Credit Hours). These courses are required from students pursuing MSc. in each track.
2. In Semester Two students take another four Compulsory Core Courses of the MSc. Specialization they choose (4x3=12 Credit Hours).
3. During the summer semester students undertake three months internship (3 CH).
4. In Semester Three students choose 3 Elective Courses of 3 credit hours each that are open to all students (3x3=9) Plus finalizing writing a Scientific Report based on the internship ( 3 Credit Hours)
Total CH (Summer Semester and Semester Three: 15 Credit Hours).
Total Credit Hours of the M.Sc. Programme are 39.

4. A Two-Track Masters of Science Program:
• M. Sc. Gender and Peace Studies
• M. Sc. Gender and Development

5- Student Entry Profile:
The programme is designed for graduate students from all professional or academic backgrounds. Students must have a 3 to 5 years of working experience, after they have received their bachelor degree, in social or natural sciences, humanities or law. However, fresh graduates can also be admitted.
6. Students' Exit Profile:
Based on assessment of existing needs in Sudan for Post-Graduates in Gender and Peace Studies or Gender and Development, most of our prospective Graduates will pursue careers in: Federal and States' Governments; INGO's, Sudanese NGO's; Academia; Research Centers; other Civil Society organizations. Some Graduates may also opt to further their studies by pursuing a doctoral training in Gender and Development or Gender and Peace Studies.
Ahfad University for Women offers doctoral training in both. Other national and international universities offer doctoral degrees.
Notes: Language of instruction is English. Regulations regarding admission till graduation are governed by the University Post Graduate Studies rules.
