March 20, 2010 (girifna)---Sudan is experiencing the largest and most organized strike by medical doctors in its recent history. Doctors are asking for salaries that were never paid and better work compensation and conditions. Last week Dr. Nahid Moh'd Al Hassan, a vocal voice within this strike, went on a hunger strike in response to president Al Bashir's threat to fire all striking doctors and to protest the regime's harassment of doctors leading the strike. The link to the video above is a testimony by a female doctor who was expelled while working in the emergency room, because she was wearing a sign in support of the strike.
The doctors' demand for fair compensation and their organization to protect their rights falls within the basic human rights under Article 40 (I) of Sudan's Interim National Constitution, which say, " The right of peaceful assembly shall be guaranteed; every one shall have the right to freedom of association with others, including the right to form and join political parties, associations and trade or professional unions for the protection of his/her interests". These rights also protected under article 23 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, "Everyone who works has the right to just and favourable remuneration ensuring for himself and his family an existence worthy of human dignity, and supplemented, if necessary, by other means of social protection" and " Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests."
