WASHINGTON – U.S. officials say a Northwest Airlines passenger from Nigeria said he was acting on behalf of al-Qaida when he tried to blow up a flight Friday as it landed in Detroit.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., identified the suspect as Abdul Mudallad, a Nigerian. King said the flight began in Nigeria and went through Amsterdam en route to Detroit.

One of the U.S. intelligence officials said the explosive device was a mix of powder and liquid. It failed when the passenger tried to detonate it.

The passenger was being questioned Friday evening.

Both of the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing.

\(CNN) -- A passenger ignited a small explosive device on a Northwest flight Friday from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Detroit, Michigan, according to a federal government bulletin.

The passenger was immediately subdued, according to Susan Elliott, spokeswoman for Delta, Northwest's parent company, Elliott said earlier that the suspect had ignited several small firecrackers. The incident resulted in some minor injuries, she said.

A passenger, identified as a Nigerian national, was later placed in custody and is being treated for burns suffered in the explosion, said the bulletin, obtained by CNN from a source familiar with the investigation.

The passenger "is claiming to have extremist affiliation and that the device was acquired in Yemen along with instructions as to when it should be used," according to the bulletin.

The FBI is investigating the incident, said bureau spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold.

President Obama, who is spending the holidays in his home state of Hawaii, was briefed on the incident during a secure phone call with aides and instructed in a subsequent discussion with security advisers "that all appropriate measures be taken to increase security for air travel," White House spokesman Bill Burton said. The president made no changes to his schedule, Burton said.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement Friday saying that air passengers "may notice additional screening measures put into place to ensure the safety of the traveling public on domestic and international flights."

One passenger from the flight was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, hospital spokeswoman Tracy Justice said.

"All passengers have deplaned and out of an abundance of caution, the plane was moved to a remote area where the plane and all baggage are currently being rescreened," the Transportation Security Administration said in a statement. Passengers from the flight were being interviewed.

The Nigerian suspect caused panic on a plane about to land at Detroit with 278 people aboard when he apparently tried to detonate some sort of bomb.

He was overpowered by passengers after the device failed to ignite properly.

Passenger Syed Jafri said he was seated three rows behind the suspect and saw a glow and smelled smoke.

Then, he said, "a young man behind me jumped on him".

"Next thing you know, there was a lot of panic," he said.

The suspect had reportedly flown from Lagos, Nigeria to Amsterdam's Schipol airport and transferred to Northwest Airlines - which is undergoing a merger with Delta Airlines - for the nine-hour flight to Detroit in an Airbus A330.

Reports named him as Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, an engineering student at University College London who had applied for a visa to attend a religious seminar.

He was not on the "no-fly list", but was reportedly known to authorities, and an official said he claimed to have been acting on instructions from al Qaeda.

After being taken into custody, he told authorities that he had used a syringe filled with chemicals to mix with powder taped to his leg, according to senior officials quoted anonymously in the US media.

UCL has been contacted by Sky News but could not immediately comment.

Representative Peter King of New York, the senior Republican on the House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee, said the explosive device was "fairly sophisticated".

"(The device) appears to be different from what we've encountered before," Mr King told Fox News.

"My understanding also is that while (the suspect) is not on a watch list, he definitely has terror connections.

"There is a terrorist nexus leading towards Al Qaeda involving this assailant.

"When it did go off he himself was seriously injured, my understanding is he has third-degree burns.

"This could have been catastrophic."

President Obama has ordered heightened security measures at all US airports.

The incident is reminiscent of a terror attempt by "shoe bomber" Richard Reid, a Briton who tried to destroy a transatlantic flight in 2001 with explosives hidden in his shoes.

He was subdued by other passengers and is serving a life sentence in the US.
