The Actual Cause of World Trade Center Collapse

The lecture will present the results of five years of investigation by Professor Astaneh and his team into why World Trade Center towers collapsed on September 11, 2009 so unexpectedly and so completely. He spent a total of 4 weeks in New York right after the collapse and conducted a field investigation. In 2002 He presented his findings to the Committee on Science of U.S. Congress. The results presented here will show that if the towers were designed following the code and using the traditional structural framing systems used in almost any other building structure, instead of the unique and very unusual system used in the collapsed WTC towers, the terrorist attacks most likely would have resulted in only local damage and not complete and catastrophic collapse of both towers where 3,000 people who were trapped in them perished.

About the Speaker:

Professor Abolhassan Astaneh-Asl is a Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of California Berkeley. His main areas of specialty are structural engineering, earthquake engineering and protection of buildings and bridges against blast and impact. He is also Lead Structural Engineer with the A/E firm CDCi (Chicago Design Consortium International) in Doha , Qatar which is involved in architectural and engineering design of buildings and other structures internationally including projects in Doha]]
