Darfuris make their voices heard On Wednesday, July 22, a devoted group of Darfuris from Washington, D.C., Virginia, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York and North Carolina were joined by an equally passionate group of American peers as they faced the sweltering heat to bring a message to the Obama Administration – justice will bring peace to Darfur, and the International Criminal Court needs American support to do it. The Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy is deeply grateful to all those who came out to encourage the Administration to take action now and protect the vulnerable people of Darfur. We extend an especially earnest ‘thank you’ to Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey of California’s 6th District for bringing this message to the rally and for taking it back to her colleagues in the Government: “We need to make ending the genocide in Darfur a top priority. This isn’t a Democratic issue or a Republican issue - this is one of the moral issues of our time.” To all of the organizations and all of the individuals who helped make this event the success it was - be it by planning, by blogging, by advertising, by signing the letter, by sending advice and encouragement, or by attending – please know that you have made a difference. This rally gave a voice to Darfuris - those who have been in the United States for many years and those who have been here only a few days. For many, it was the first time they had the opportunity to speak up on this issue. Overall, the message the group heard from many notable speakers was “Never give up!” and we at Damanga reaffirm our commitment to you, our supporters, and to the people of Darfur – we will never give up.
