WESTERN BAHR EL GHAZAL (April 10, 2009) - Western Bahr Ghazal State has graduated some 220 policeman, raising hopes that the level of crime in the state would soon be reduced considerably.

The ceremony, held on April 7, 2009 marked the first time the state trained and graduated its own policemen since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

The move was in line with the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement’s policy to decentralize power at all levels.

Western Bahr Ghazal Governor Mark Nyipuoch, Inspector General of the South Sudan Police Lt. Gen. Makuei Deng Majuc and the State Director General for Police Francis Marial Abur, all attended the ceremony.

Governor Nyipuoch, speaking on behalf of the Government of South Sudan Minister of Internal Affairs Paul Mayom, outlined the duties of the graduating men and women, after training for six months.

He told them that their mission was to enforce the law and combat crime, which has been increasing at an alarming rate in the state over the past months.

One official after another advised the graduates to implement the law “without fear or favor.”

The South Sudan Police Inspector General Majuc urged the policemen to be role models for the rest of the citizens by acting in accordance with the constitution and laws of South Sudan.
