Benazir Bhutto matters. She matters because she is on the joint Pakistani election ticket which is being backed by the US (and apparently by Britain too). And she matters because at the moment, there doesn't seem to be any Plan B if this doesn't work out.

Ex-Pakistan PM Benzir BhuttoThe Oxford and Harvard-educated former Pakistani Prime Minister is the sort of politician the West believes it 'can do business with', to coin a phrase.

The Western diplomats who've been trying to broker a deal between President Musharraf and her feel she would lend more legitimacy to the beleaguered General.

Having spent a large part of her time in exile in Britain, she's also more than familiar with the sensitivities in the UK about training camps and exported terrorism, while she also embodies the links between the two countries.

There's no doubt about it, Ms Bhutto is smart, redoubtable, exceedingly determined and, perhaps most of all, she has charisma.

I first met and interviewed her in 1985 when I was a reporter working for BBC Radio. She had just spent five years in detention in her homeland, including 10 months in solitary confinement.

Her father, former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, had been hanged by his Army Chief of Staff, General Mohammed Zia ul-Haq in 1979.

Then, as now, she had fled to England to spend two years in exile. She had already suffered terrible personal tragedy and there was more just around the corner.

She left the UK to bury her younger brother - who died in mysterious circumstances in the south of France - and a few months later she was back in Pakistan to call for the overthrow of General Zia.

Hundreds of thousands thronged the streets to greet her then. She will be hoping for a re-run in more ways than one.

But she is playing a very, very dangerous game. She's already alienated sections of the Pakistani public by cavorting rather publicly with the man more than a few believe is a dictator and, as far as we know, she still doesn't have a cast-iron deal with him.


Sky News' Alex CrawfordThe Government has said she can return and will probably stay in Pakistan longer than the five hours her rival and former PM Nawaz Sharif stayed before being deported to Saudi Arabia.

But the conditions she wanted cleared up before she returned, still exist. She still faces corruption charges and the General is still clinging to his beloved uniform.

So, she's either decided to take her chances with the electorate and is banking on western influence to see her through - or she has, indeed, got some sort of tentative deal with the President. But neither is prepared to admit it publicly at the moment for fear of appearing desperate and manipulated (the President) or dancing with the dictator (Ms Bhutto).

Whatever the truth, Ms Bhutto's return to Karachi on October 18 will look like a triumphant return.

Her Pakistan Peoples Party is very adept at mobilising their supporters onto the streets and there is certain to be quite a noisy and fevered reception for the first woman Prime Minister of Pakistan.

But will that translate into votes and will it translate into power? Ms Bhutto has shown she is not one to throw in the towel - ever. The next few months are going to be explosive ones in Pakistan.

Quote: توفيت رئيس الوزراء الباكستانية السابقة وزعيمة حزب الشعب بينظير بوتو جراء جروح أصيبت بها في محاولة اغتيال استهدفتها في روالبندي بباكستان. وأكدت وزارة الداخلية الباكستانية نبأ وفاة بوتو، كما أكد النبأ مسؤول كبير في حزب الشعب. وقالت التقارير إن انفجارا كبيرا استهدف تجمعا انتخابيا لبوتو بمدينة روالبندي أسفر عن سقوط 20 قتيلا على الأقل. وقال مراسل بي بي سي العربية في باكستان أبو بكر يونس إن المستشارة الاعلامية لبوتو أصيبت أيضا في الانفجار، وإنها نقلت مع بوتو الى المستشفى. وأضاف مراسلنا أن العشرات من أنصار بوتو يحاولون الدخول الى المستشفى لكن قوات الشرطة تمنعهم. بينظير بوتو قبل اغتيالها بقليل. ويقول أبو بكر يونس إن الانفجار وقع بعد خطاب انتخابي لبوتو في منطقة لياقت باغ قالت فيه إنها قادرة هي وحزبها في حال فازت في الانتخابات العامة المقبلة على القضاء على المسلحين الموجودين في المناطق الشمالية. وقالت مصادر وزارة الداخلية الباكستانية لوكالة الأنباء الفرنسية إن مفجرا انتحاريا وراء الحادث. لكن تقارير قالت إنها أصيب بطلقات رصاص. وكان 4 اشخاص قد لقوا حتفهم في وقت سابق في موقع قريب من روالبندي في أحداث عنف لها علاقة بالانتخابات. يذكر أن بوتو كانت قد عادت من المنفى إلى باكستان في أكتوبر/ تشرين أول الماضي وتعرض موكبها لتفجير انتحاري خلف 130 قتيلا. جدير بالذكر أن حزب الشعب الباكستاني يتمتع بتأييد واسع النطاق في باكستان.

اغتيال بنظير بوتو بطلق نارى فى مؤتمر انتخابي



اسلام اباد - العرب اونلاين – وكالات : أكدت الداخلية الباكستانية ومصادر من الحزب الشعبى الباكستانى مصرع بنظير بوتو بعد اصابتها بطلق نارى فى الرأس صاحب الانفجار الذى استهدف مؤتمرا انتخابيا لها فى روالبندي.

هذا وقد تعرضت بوتو لهجوم انتحارى وقع فى مدينة روالبندي، حيث كانت على راس مؤتمر انتخابى هناك.

ووفقاً للتصريحات التى أدلى بها مستشارها الأمنى لوسائل الإعلام الباكستانية فإن بوتو قد لقيت مصرعها نتيجة إصابتها بطلق نارى فى الرقبة إثر الانفجار الانتحارى الذى أسفر عن مصرع 25 شخصاً وإصابة 40 .

ووقع انفجار كبير الخميس خلال تجمع لرئيسة الوزراء الباكستانية السابقة بنازى بوتو احد قادة المعارضة فى ضاحية اسلام اباد، وذلك قبل اسبوعين من الانتخابات التشريعية.

وقالت وزارة الداخلية الباكستانية ان الانفجار الذى قتل الخميس عشرة اشخاص على الاقل ناجم عن عملية انتحارية.
