John Garang saw the future of Sudan even in 1983; he saw that Sudan had the potential to be one of the brightest nations in Africa. Throughout his life, John illustrated the importance of unity within the diversity that God gave the country of Sudan. His philosophy lives on through many Sudanese intellectuals and gives them the hope to establish a system that can save the entire nation, as well as other African countries. He believed that all of this was possible when people of all backgrounds worked together in order to achieve their goals and dreams.

John Garang’s work and achievements can be equated to that of other black leaders such as W.E.B Du Bois and Martin Luther King, Jr. in the United States, Marcus Garvey in the Caribbean, as well as Nelson Mandela in South Africa. Each of these leaders had a vision to give black citizens the same rights and opportunities as others by directing them to strive to achieve what was once considered impossible by way of the philosophies of unity, social justice and equality. In addition, John used his ability as a leader to galvanize the masses and help them work to accomplish their dreams as one unit. John saw Sudan as a great nation and recognized that it was 7,000 years old and had been established by the greatest kingdom of Kush, which created a civilization that extended all the way to modern Egypt and beyond. The kingdom of Kush is known for being the first to master the process of melting iron; through this process, Kushites were able to create tools that eventually helped build up the kingdom of Kush and other kingdoms during that time. Also, John used this particular background to give all Sudanese citizens pride in the historical significance of the civilizations that came before them; today, these ideas help to ignite the current younger generations in all that they choose to pursue. John always reminds us as Sudanese Africans that we are great when we work together as one collective unit and was able to bring the best of the people to the arena in order to take on hard tasks and impact positive change.

History will remember John Garang as one of the greatest Sudanese African leaders that not only loved Sudan, but also loved Africa and the people who lived in the continent. He is being studied in most African nations today as a moderate Sudanese leader in Africa and is recognized for his valuable ideals that produced freedom, justice and equality for all.
