Osman Zanon, a prominent Sudanese leader, has been a driving force in the country’s latest uprisings. His contributions to the struggles of the Sudanese people have been more than anyone has expected: not only does he have the ability to spread and share his messages with the masses, but he also is able to communicate with the youth inside the country of Sudan, a group that is very important in terms of securing Sudan’s future. Zanon has created new ways as far as communication using certain phrases and body language that has given him the chance to initiate the youth of Sudan and encourage them to support the causes that have been brought forward in order to battle the administration of Omar Al-Bashir. In order to effectively fight against the oppressive regime of Sudan, we must study and look at new ways of motivating our country’s youth to use their talents and skills to support the cause of our people. Zanon’s style of quick thinking, creating quick solutions, and thinking outside of the box is exactly what we need now more than ever to be effective in our efforts. Zanon’s approaches are not unfamiliar, however; we have seen his methods used before by Nelson Mandela, an important figure in South Africa during the apartheid movement.
In 1942, Mandela became heavily involved in the political affairs of South Africa; he later joined the African National Congress in 1944 and helped form the ANC Youth League. Mandela proved to be successful through his efforts, and he began moving up the ranks of the ANC Youth League. This was not his only accomplishment; in 1952, Mandela and his colleague, Oliver Tambo, established the very first black firm in South Africa, Mandela and Tambo, after obtaining his BA in law. The quality of his leadership is akin to many great leaders: he established a goal and a vision that many of the South African people, both black and white, wanted to achieve. Because of his vision, Mandela was able to lead the masses towards their ultimate goal of integration and racial equality for all South Africans. Mandela’s methods of
organizing the masses, including the youth of South Africa, proved to be effective and successful, and we have seen this again with Osman Zanon.
Despite the length of time it took both of these leaders to spread their message, their consistent efforts took them far. In order for Sudan to progress and move forward in the right direction, we need individuals like Osman Zanon to not only lead the fight and win against the Sudanese regime, but also build the foundation for a new Sudan.
