For how long will the world continue to watch the unfolding horrors of violations of human rights and violence against women in Sudan?

The government of the National Congress Party, headed by President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, wanted by the International Criminal Court is fully engaged in a brutal campaign to exterminate entire populations in several regions in Sudan including Darfur, the Blue Nile and Nuba Mountains.

Ladies and gentlemen:

No doubt that those of you who monitor the situation in Sudan have seen the heinous crimes still being committed by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and its allied Janjaweed militias, rebranded by Al-Bashir government as Rapid Support Forces.

In its latest report on 10 Feb 2015, Human Rights Watch confirmed that government troops carried out mass rape against women and girls in North Darfur village of Tabit December last year. Some perpetrators who participated in the attacks told HRW that they were directly given orders from superior officers to“rape women, because the women were rebel supporters”.

Since January 1st, at least 20,000 innocent civilians have been forced to flee their homes in Darfur. President al-Bashir is bombing civilians, blocking the investigation of a reported mass rape of over 200 Darfuri women, and, in the midst of the sharpest increase in violence in years, demanding the removal of UN peacekeepers.

On January 6th, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that 115 villages have either been abandoned or burned to the ground in North Darfur. Attackers have forced women, children and the elderly to leave their villages with nothing to survive on.

In the border states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile, defenseless civilians in the Nuba Mountains face a relentless bombing campaign by the Sudanese Air Force and ground attacks by the Sudanese Armed Forces. On January 20th, a hospital in South Kordofan run by Doctors Without Borders was deliberately targeted by an aerial bombing campaign, depriving the local population of life-saving care.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Grosse crimes and violations against defenceless and innocent women, children and elderly people in Darfur, Blue Nile and Nuba Mountains are among worst in history where a head of state mobilizes an entire army, militias and security apparatus, ordering them to exterminate his own people.

We all know that the systematic targeting by Khartoum government of specific ethnicities in Darfur since the outbreak of the violence in 2004 has become an entrenched state policy. These targeted groups include the Zaghawa, Fur, Massaliet and others. These communities have suffered enough and deserve your attention and action. They simply want the killing to stop so that they and their children have a peaceful life.
The lack of response by the international community, UN, the Europeans, US and by the nations of the region only provides Bashir with a green light to continue the killing.
