Egypt deports 23 Darfuri to Sudan
Sunday 9 November 2008.
November 8, 2008 (LONDON)

— Egyptian authorities deported 23 Sudanese to Khartoum where they arrived handcuffed on Friday, said a Darfuri rights organization today.

The deportees, who are all from western Sudan region of Darfur, were arrested in El Arish of the Sinai peninsula, not far from the Israeli border on August 26 this year.

According to the Darfur Democratic Forum, they were transported to Cairo where they had been interrogated beaten and tortured before to hand them over to the Sudanese embassy which organized their departure to Sudan.

The rights organization denounced the move saying it contravenes the international humanitarian law and the other international human rights conventions.

In what can be described as a routine, Egyptian police killed last month 2 Darfuris attempting to cross illegally to Israel. Also this month one was killed till now.

Up to last August, Egypt arrested around 172 Sudanese trying to make their way into Israel. Also more than 19 were killed.

The porous 250-kilometre (155-mile) Egypt-Israel border has become a major transit route for migrants, asylum-seekers.
