Warrants issued for Darfur suspects
THE HAGUE, Netherlands The International Criminal Court in The Hague says it has issued arrest warrants for two people suspected of committing war crimes in Darfur.
The prosecutor says the Sudanese government has the "legal duty" to arrest a government minister and a janjaweed militia leader. He says the government has to respect the court's decision.
In the past Sudanese officials have refused to arrest and turn over suspects to the court.
The prosecutor has named the suspects in 51 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity including the murder, rape, torture and persecution of civilians in Darfur.
The warrants are crucial toward bringing atrocities in the Sudanese region before a panel of international judges
