Dear Secretary-General,

The international community has a responsibility to protect the people of Darfur. But after four years the destruction and loss of life in Darfur continues without end.

Already 200,000 people have died needlessly, possibly many hundreds of thousands more. Over 2 million will spend another night sleeping in makeshift camps where disease, rape and death are all too common. Four million need humanitarian assistance, and nearly a quarter of them cannot be reached by aid. Attacks on the humanitarian operation are unprecedented. This cannot continue.

The grim four-year anniversary of the conflict will pass on 29 April, marked by Day for Darfur protests around the world but no action unless you insist on it to the UN Security Council.

I call on you to demand that governments pressure all sides to stop the violence, respect the ceasefire and end opposition to the hybrid force that must be deployed urgently to Darfur. I believe you have a vital leadership role to play. Your request for more time cannot be afforded.

It can no longer be tolerated that the Government of Sudan - responsible for so much of the violence - can still insist that the international community has no right to offer Darfuri people the immediate protection they need. The Security Council has the power and the responsibility to make Sudan and other parties to the conflict stick to the agreements they have already signed and that they now choose to ignore.

I am just one voice from the tens of thousands from around the world who are taking part in the Globe for Darfur Campaign. Our message is clear. No more excuses, no more false starts, and no more broken promises; Time is Up - Protect Darfur.

Yours sincerely,
