DARFUR Union in the UK:- A Plea to the International Community and Aid Agencies regarding the Dire Humanitarian Situation in Darfur Cities (Elgeneina, Kutum and Zalingei)

The UK, US and EU must act now to implement the “Never Again” on the ground

The international community and aid agencies must act now to prevent the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Darfur which has the same attributes to start of the genocide back in the early 2000s started by Bashir regime (ref 1). The situation in the three cities of Kutum, Zalingei and Elgeneina is dire. The course the estimate suggests at least a thousand and one hundred people have been killed in Elgeneina alone in West Darfur since the 27th April 2023 (ref 2), and thousands have been displaced; dozens were murdered in Kutum, north Darfur (ref 3). The Janjaweed militias under many names, are continuing to attack civilians with impunity. The cities of Elgeneina, Kutum and Zalingei are continued to be under siege and completely cut of from the rest of the world, as phone lines and networks are shut, and most important very limited flow of food and medical supplied and restricted to no access to clinics and hospitals. The city of Zalingei have suffered a brutal fighting over the last two weeks or so, which saw the suffering of the civilians, and the stories coming from eye witnesses that managed to escape the siege were horrific, killing, looting followed by burning people houses and shops (ref. 4). Furthermore, a report of some “53 families arrived from Kutum on foot to El Fasher, in desperate need of help” (ref. 5).

The people of those regions are in desperate need of food, water, shelter, medicine and other essential supplies. They are also in need of protection from the Janjaweed militias, who are targeting civilians on the basis of their ethnicity. The international community must provide immediate assistance to the people of Darfur, and the security council must act immediately to put pressure on the leaders of RSF to stop their Janjaweed from causing genocide in the region. With the lawlessness spreading in the capital, the biggest loser from this meaningless war in the capital being the people of Sudan in Darfur.

The people of Darfur have suffered for too long. We must act now to end their suffering.
Here are some specific actions that the international community and aid agencies can take:
Provide immediate humanitarian assistance to the people of Darfur, by securing a safe passage of aid from PortSudan to the affected areas, including food, water, shelter, medicine and other essential supplies.
Establish safe zones in Darfur where civilians can be protected from the Janjaweed militias. This can only happen by empowering existing peace forces and providing them with a clear Mandate.
Put pressure on the Rapid Speed forces and its Janjaweed branches to stop the violence and allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need. This in terms will help humanitarian agencies to allow for real data gathering regarding the number of dead persons and also help to bury the bodies that are all over the ground in Elgeneina, Kutum and Zalingei.
Protect those IDPs and new waves of displace people that are shelterless at this very moment in DARFUR, and also provide immediate aid to the new wave of refugees who just managed to make it across the boarder to the neighbouring Chad.
The ongoing meaningless war in the Capital of Sudan, Khartoum, between the Sudan Arm Forces (SAF) and Rapid Speed Forces (RSF) will further ignite the fuel of violence against the civilians in the region and moreover, will prolong the genocide in Darfur.

We call upon the international community to fulfil their pledges towards the victims of Genocide by implementing the “Never Again” and transforming it from a slogan to an action on the ground.
