24 October 2017 | Khartoum – In observance of the United Nations Day, the Government of Sudan, represented by the State of Khartoum and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held a flag hoisting ceremony at the State of Khartoum Secretariat building along with members of the United Nations Country Team, and the United Nations Association in Sudan.

“We honor in this day the historical global efforts of the governments and peoples who founded this great organization” said Lieutenant General Engineer AbdulRahim Mohamed Hussein, Governor of Khartoum State and host of the event.

For his part, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Atta Almanan Bakhit, wished the organization a happy 72nd anniversary and hoped that “the United Nations will achieve its goals in maintaining international peace and security and promoting peaceful coexistence and brotherhood among the nations and peoples of the world.”

On behalf of the United Nations, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator reiterated this year’s focus on people and took the opportunity once again to congratulate the people and government of Sudan on the recent lifting of US economic sanctions on the country and noted that “the United Nations is working with the Government of Sudan to ensure a continues forward-looking agenda while also recognizing that the future is a hopeful one.”

In addition to government representatives, the ceremony was attended by members of the diplomatic community, civil society and media present in Sudan.

For his part, the Vice President of the United Nations Association in Sudan highlighted the challenges “facing the world today, and the achievements of the United Nations in facing some of those challenges that need to be recognized.”

As part of the commemoration activities, the following weeks will also witness events organized by the United Nations Country Team in Sudan that will be engaging the public, particularly youth and academia, to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) mainly through the medium of Art. The SDGs are a set of goals that aim to end poverty, protect the planet and to ensure prosperity for all.

The United Nations Country Team in Sudan encompasses twenty agencies, funds and programs of the UN system carrying out development, emergency, humanitarian, recovery and transition activities in partnership with the Government of Sudan and close collaboration with national and international partners.

Globally, the United Nations Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.

On 6 February 1956, the Security Council recommended to the general assembly that Sudan be admitted to membership in the United Nations through UNSC Resolution [S/3546].
