KHARTOUM, 27 August 2015: The Ambassador of Japan to Sudan, His Excellency Mr. Hideki Ito, visited on 26 August projects funded by the Government of Japan and implemented by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Wad Sharifey camp, eastern Sudan.
“We are extremely honoured to receive the visit of the Ambassador of Japan, as the generous support received from the people of Japan has enabled us to continue responding to the needs of new arrivals”, UNHCR Deputy Representative and Officer in Charge, Ms. Angela Li Rosi, says.
Japan contributed US$ 7.5 million towards UNHCR’s programme in Sudan in 2015, of which over US$ 1.4 million have been earmarked for interventions in refugee camps in eastern Sudan. Thanks to this contribution, UNHCR has been able to guarantee access to primary health care for 25,000 refugees, provide nutritional support to up to 15,000 refugee children and ensure that 8,500 refugees have had their shelter needs covered.
Sudan hosts some 370,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, of which 112,000 have been living in nine camps in eastern Sudan, sometimes for decades. “In an ever more shrinking funding environment, it has become extremely challenging, if not impossible, to maintain a targeted humanitarian response up to the standards. It is important we do not forget the magnitude of needs in the East, and the continuous support from Japan makes a significant difference”, Li Rosi says.
“Sudan has historically accommodated a large number of refugees and continues to receive more. I appreciate the humanitarian stance of Sudan particularly the local communities in hosting desperate refugees. I commend UNHCR and its partners’ work of supporting Sudan in meeting the basic human needs of the refugees. I am pleased to see today our humble contribution in helping them. I hope the stakeholders can come together in finding an answer to their future”, H.E. Mr. Hideki Ito, Ambassador of Japan to Sudan, says.
UNHCR in Sudan works with the Commissioner for Refugees (COR), the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC), and other national institutions to protect and assist refugees, asylum-seekers and internally displaced people. UNHCR has 11 offices in Sudan and its financial requirements for 2015 amount to US$ 173.4 million.
