Press Statement
The Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Agency (SRRA) wishes to express its concerns at the difficult humanitarian and security situation facing hundreds of Sudanese families in Yemen as a result of the tragic situation of conflict in Yemen. SRRA calls for the UNHCR, other UN agencies and international community at large to extend appropriate protection measures to the Sudanese community who were left behind in Yemen facing a difficult humanitarian situation. Their Human Rights are being violated at every level by continuous aerial bombing as well as by the Yemeni security forces.
Countries, including Sudan, have stepped up efforts to evacuate their citizens amid the worsening humanitarian crisis.
According to some credible sources in Yemen, there are many thousands of refugees / migrants from the Sudan in Yemen when the Saudi-led coalition started its aerial strikes on Houthi rebel positions. The government of Sudan’s embassy evacuated no more than 2500 persons, mainly affiliates of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP), to Sudan and closed its embassy in Yemen; leaving behind thousands trapped in Yemen. Those trapped behind are left almost with no option for escape route. These trapped Sudanese has been labelled as affiliates of Sudanese opposition; either as members of the SPLM-N or members of the Darfuri opposition rebels. They have been targeted because of their political beliefs and/or ethnic affiliation. They are being killed, harassed in public transport, pillaged and tortured. Their humanitarian situation has deteriorated beyond tolerance.
One trapped Sudanese woman in Yemen has said: "we cannot go out to buy food without risking harassment and possibly killing in cold blood. We know that there is a lack of clean water in the city because the water pipes have been damaged, the situation is extremely difficult for us and we fear for our lives, safety and security."
SRRA appeals to the UNHCR, ICRC, other UN agencies and the international community at large to consider the following options:
1. Protect the Sudanese in their current locations;
2. Relocate them to other safer locations within Yemen; or
3. Repatriate them to other countries where they can live in dignity and safety.
