Sudanese journalists Union (SJU) rejects confiscating of 10 newspapers

Sudanese journalists Union (SJU)has declare its fully rejection of confiscating of 10 newspapers on Sunday by National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), noting that step negatively impacts on the position of press freedoms in the country.
In statement on Monday, SJU stressed that like these actions undermine the efforts that have been made by the Union internally and externally to improve the image of Sudan in press freedoms in the world, pointing out that the step is contrary to the Press and Publications Act 2009 and all laws, the international conventions and the norms governing journalistic work.
The SJU said that suspending of four newspapers indefinitely would hinder the role of the press in the enlightenment and supervision, disclosing that its Executive Office will remain in continuous contact with the Presidency of the Republic, the Information Ministry, the Press and Publications Council and NISS to discuss what happened and to put an end to these exceptional procedures.
NISS confiscated issues of 10 major newspapers on Sunday, in response to reports they carried on sexual assaults on children in Sudan, newspaper editors and a security source said.
The newspapers had published a story on Sunday based on a speech by an activist who said rape and sexual harassment were common on vehicles taking children to school.
Security services have cracked down on press and political freedoms after President Omar Hassan al-Bashir won another term in elections last month, analysts say. Security services confiscated the entire print runs of 14 newspapers in February.
