The Ministerial Summit meeting of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa called for lifting U.S. unilateral sanctions imposed on Sudan, pointing out that these sanctions had negative impacts on Sudanese citizens In statements on Monday the COMESA said that it has taken decision announcing its standing behind Sudan against sanctions. Sudan’s Trade Minister, Osman Omar Sharif, stated that the meeting stressed the need to lift the sanctions and passed the results of the ministerial meeting of African Agriculture Ministers, pointing out that Sudan had been one of the most important States that provided an integrated project for agricultural development as the model can be generalized to the African States. He said the meeting commended the efforts made by Sudan on development of agriculture, noting that the meeting discussed the report of the administrative and financial functioning of the Organization and contributions Members and how to finance infrastructure projects. In last February the United States Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced that it had decided to loosen U.S. sanctions on Sudan via allowing exports of personal communications hardware and software including smart phones and laptops. The Sudanese-American relations are currently witnessing signs of breakthrough as the two sides started exchanging visits by senior officials for dialogue to discuss many issues that prevented full normalization of relations between Khartoum and Washington.
