The Sudanese co-chair of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee (AJOC), Hassan Ali Nimir, disclosed that the meetings of the Joint Committee, which was scheduled for last week in Addis Ababa has stalled because of the intransigence of the Government of South Sudan and its reservation on certain actions that have been agreed upon previously.
Nimir told Sudanese Media Center (SMC) on Friday that South Sudanese co-chair of the Joint Committee reserved on the consensus agenda agreed by the parties at the past meetings which represented in the return of community dialogue between Misseriya and Dinka Ngok tribes that has pivotal role in the security on the ground, besides the agreement signed between the two tribes in 2011 which considered the only legal reference which approved forming of the Joint Committee of Sudan and South Sudan and entrusted with the completion of the necessary institutions in the region (the legislative Council and the police).
In line with Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), the residents of the disputed area have to hold a referendum to determine whether Abyei will remain part of the Sudan or join the South Sudan. But the two countries failed to agree on the participation of the Misseriya pastoralists who reside there several months every year.
