The visiting United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, Steven Feldstein, has promised to convey remarks and reservations of Sudanese officials on the treatment of United States with Sudan, stressing the continuation of constructive dialogue between Washington and Khartoum.
At the end of his five-day visit to the Sudanese capital Khartoum and Blue Nile state Feldstein called on Thursday Khartoum’s government to release political detainees, to stop confiscation of news papers and restriction on freedom of expression.
For their part, Sudanese ambassadors, who met the American official, called on Obama Administration to re-examine its relationship with Khartoum through raising the national the dialogue which they said it must continue to reach its ends and culminating by removal of Sudan from the list of State sponsors of terrorism and lifting sanctions that resulted in blocking the growth of the Sudanese economy and impacted negatively on human rights.
They criticized United States policy towards Khartoum and the economic sanctions imposed on it, besides the interventions in the internal affairs of Sudan
U.S official expressed hope that the recent American decision to allow export of personal communications hardware and software will promote freedom of expression and help to reach understandings between the two governments and end Sudan’s internal crises.
Sudan is on the list of terror sponsoring countries and subjected to harsh economic sanctions. Washington admits Sudan’s cooperation in the fight against terrorism, but attached new conditions to normalizing ties related to the end of the conflicts in Darfur, Blue Nile and South Kordofan.
Sudanese officials however, insist that issues of bilateral relations should be discussed without interfering in Sudan internal affairs.
