Police were investigating an apartment in the area of 103rd Street and 107th Avenue after five people were stabbed, and one of the victims died in hospital early Sunday morning.

A young Sudanese-Canadian has been identified as Edmonton’s latest homicide victim.

He was one of five people stabbed in related attacks north of downtown over the weekend.

Deng Mathew Garang Tong, 23, of Edmonton, died in hospital from his wounds, autopsy results revealed.

Four other stabbing victims are recovering from their injuries.

Tong is the oldest of six children born to a family who moved to Edmonton when he was young, said Thomas Makuoi, chairman of the local Sudanese-Canadian Dinka Cultural Society.

He spoke with Tong’s father Monday night, soon after they found out about the death.

“Last night, his heart was breaking so bad,” Makuoi said. “That is the eldest son.”

But as for what happened, “we have no information at all,” he said.

Police said they were first called to the area of 102nd Street and 107th Avenue for a weapons complaint about 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

Officers found two men with stab wounds and had them taken to hospital, where they were admitted in serious but stable condition.

While investigating that attack, police received information that sent homicide detectives to an apartment one block west on 103rd Street, where they found Tong.

Then they got reports of two other men who were also in hospital with stab wounds.

The attacks are under investigation.
