Ethiopia has disclosed that on it will send more peacekeepers to the disputed area of Abyei. The head of International Peace-keeping Training Centre, Hassan Ibrahim said on Friday that Ethiopia would deploy 600 additional peace keepers in Abyei, South Sudan and Somalia next month. “Since the peacekeeping force has finalized its preparations, it will be deployed in March following the supervision of UN and the AU,” Ibrahim told (EBC). He added that the peacekeepers will be deployed around Kismayo in Somalia and three helicopter gunships would be sent to South Sudan, pointing out that reparations to deploy half of the 1,069 troops that will be assigned to Abyei under the UN Interim Security Force in Abyei (UNISFA) have also been finalized. The United Nations Security Council in last October extended the mandate of its peacekeeping force in Abyei (UNISFA) until February 2015 as part of the organization’s ongoing efforts to maintain peace and protect civilians in the oil-producing region. The resolution was adopted by the 15-member world body in a unanimous vote. UNISFA, set up by the Council in June 2011 following an outbreak of violence after Sudanese troops took control of the contested area weeks prior to South Sudan’s secession from Sudan, oversees demilitarization of the area and maintains security. The Council, in its resolution, reiterated demands that the two Sudans immediately resume the work of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee (AJOC)
